      Req#: R42039

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is part of the Blue Origin Engines business unit, where our focus is the design, development, manufacturing and testing of engines and propulsion systems. Built for multiple uses, our family of engines is powering the next generation of rockets for commercial, civil, national security and human spaceflight.

As part of a hardworking team of diverse engineers, you will work in the Engines Thermal Analysis group among other experts in heat transfer and flow network modeling. As part of this passionate and accomplished group of engineers, you will directly contribute to the design and qualification of the most advanced liquid rocket engines being developed today. You will participate in all stages of rocket engine development, from concept through detailed design and test support.

As an experienced practitioner in heat transfer, you will be responsible for quantifying the thermal state of turbomachinery components and assemblies. You will generate, maintain, and document 2d and 3d finite element analyses of whole turbopump assemblies and individual components. You will predict the thermal states of turbomachinery components and assemblies through mission transients to aid structural and clearance analyses, directly impacting pump performance and safety. Relying on your fundamentals in heat transfer, you will anchor thermal models to test data and make recommendations for updated instrumentation suites on subsequent test campaigns.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

      • Thermal analysis of rocket engine turbomachinery at varying levels of maturity and detail
      • Meticulous bookkeeping of model status and changes through time
      • Defining and anchoring thermal predictions of turbomachinery components and assemblies to test data
      • Advocating for methods that will improve component and analysis performance and reliability
      • Technical and career mentorship of less experienced engineers
      • Peer review of thermal analyses on all of Blue Origin’s active engine programs

      Minimum Qualifications:

      • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline is required
      • Minimum of 6 years of industry experience in heat transfer design or analysis
      • Experience with ANSYS Classic or ANSYS Mechanical for thermal analysis
      • Solid understanding of heat transfer, flow, and thermodynamic first principles
      • Good communication skills and proficiency with productivity tools
      • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

      Preferred Qualifications:

      • Advanced degree (master’s or higher) in an engineering discipline with a focus on thermal or fluid sciences
      • Experience using flow network software to analyze turbomachinery systems such as blade and vane passages or film cooling, combustor cooling designs, or disk cavities
      • Prior job experience in thermal/fluid testing and choosing the appropriate instrumentation for a given test intent
      • Demonstrated knowledge surrounding cryogens and phase change heat transfer
