      Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars
Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. All thesis projects are arranged in business critical areas and therefore you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!

      About this opportunity – Background
Today’s passenger cars should be able to resist impact loads caused by e.g. poor road conditions or unexpected urban pavements without severe damage or loss of driving functionality. If the car is exposed to high-speed impacts, some damage could occur. The collapse logic that defines the sequence of how structures and systems are allowed to deform must still be fulfilled, so that the basic capability of the car will remain. These impact loads are over in less than a second and the vehicle structural components needs to be treated with non-linear material models including failure capability to secure the structural integrity. Today, structural parts are treated with CAE component analysis using static loads from transient multi-body analysis. However, there’s an interest to explore if the correlation between CAE and physical testing can be improved with a full vehicle dynamic analysis approach. This thesis project is a collaboration between Safety and Durability departments.

      Scope of the thesis work
      • Review current method using component analysis.
      • Simulate strength events with full vehicle crash models using LS-Dyna dynamic analysis.
      • Identify important structural areas and correlate shock loads and deformation based on available test data.
      • Propose a method to evaluate high speed strength events.
Test data including, acceleration, force history, pictures and movies from EX90 high speed strength events will be provided by Volvo Cars. FE simulations will be done using the LS-DYNA FE software.
