      The opportunity

      Exciting opportunities currently exist with BC Ferries to be part of our Nanaimo crew. If you hold a minimum Watchkpeeing Mate Certificate and seek a position of responsibility as a ship’s officer, this may be the role for you.

      Reporting to the Chief Officer, Third Officers are responsible for:

      • Standing a watch as a junior member of the Bridge Team; assisting in the navigation of the vessel.
      • Supervising the loading/unloading of the car deck and passenger; ensuring that lines are securely attached to the shore, and the ramp and apron are adjusted; advising the bridge the vessel is clear to sail; and checking vehicles for any safety concerns.
      • Maintaining the wheelhouse; correcting chats and publications; and completing various logs and reports.
      • Analyzing information in the manifest for load size and vessel stability.
      • Assisting the Chief Officer in the leading, directing and training the crew in fire, safety and boat drills; and responding to emergency situations.
      • Performing additional duties including operating hydraulic equipment during arrival/departure; handling passenger inquired and complaints; training crew; and conducting safety equipment checks.

      What you bring to the team

      The successful applicant is a deck officer who possesses the technical and leadership & management skills required for the safe and efficient operation of the vessel. Emphasis is placed on coastal navigation skills and executing these duties within a highly professional bridge team environment. You will be committed to the Company’s vision and values including safety, exceeding customer expectations and performance efficiency.
