  Summary:
  
  Gain professional experience in a manufacturing setting. The Tool Room Intern will train with the Supervisor or Lead Toolroom Machinist. Training will include:

  • Safety
  • Basic use of measuring tools (Micrometers, calipers, Etc.)
  • Basic Milling Machine set-up and operation
  • Basic Lathe set-up and operation
  • Basic surface grinding set-up and operation
  • Print reading
  • Material types
  • Maintenance and care of Toolroom machine tools
  • Toolroom heat treat

  Interns will be expected to perform duties of Design and Project Engineers to the extent possible based on their level of curriculum completion.
  
  Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Assist manufacturing and the test lab with creating processes and tooling designs for new and existing designs
  • Ability to accurately collect, analyze, and summarize test data
  • Write test plans and test reports in support of new programs
  • Troubleshoot processes and tooling to resolve manufacturing and test issues
  • Maintain accurate, orderly project records, including design and test data, customer specifications, directives, etc.
  • Create designs and drawings based on engineering specifications or descriptions of customer requirements
  • Apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to facilitate inspection and manufacturing
  • Follow all safety and housekeeping rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Machine a wide variety of parts for company use such as replacement parts or new design parts, tooling, gages and machine repair.
  • Study blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished work piece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
  • Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for subsequent machining.
  • Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.
  • Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.
  • Start and observe machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
  • Verify conformance of finished work piece to specifications.
  • Detect faulty operation or defective material.
  • Perform housekeeping on equipment and in work area.
  • Set up and operate machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.
  • Fit and assemble parts into complete assembly.
  • Verify dimensions and alignment of assembly.
  • Operate welding equipment to cut or weld parts (Mig, Tig, gas, stick, brazing).
  • Develop specifications from general description and draws sketch of part or product to be fabricated.
  • Confer with engineers, production personnel, programmers, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems.

  Required Skills, Education and Experience

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering
  • 1st year college student able to commit to 2 semesters
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • MS Office proficient
  • Mechanical aptitude displayed through personal hobbies/projects or work experience
  • Experience with group work environments
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
