- Actively lead the development and implementation of safety programs, policies, procedures and initiatives that will support employees working to prevent incidents and build safety capacity.
- Play a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing the organizational commitment to a safe and secure work environment. This position will collaborate with the Corporate Safety team, to ensure alignment with the Corporate Safety Strategy and implementation of Energy Resources safety initiatives. This position assists the training group in all aspects of safety training development and presentation.
- As a critical safety resource at Tucson Power Production, this position will be a contributing member of a dynamic team and will serve as a safety coach, safety trainer, and mentor for all employees and members of the leadership team.
- This position will have a wide range of areas with different safety needs. The position will be responsible for multiple fossil fuel power generation sites as well as solar, PV, and battery storage areas throughout Energy Resources.
- 3-5 years of safety specialist experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Demonstrated knowledge of OSHA, MSHA, NFPA, ANSI, ACC, NESC, NEC regulations, standards and best practices.
- Demonstrated ability to present to large groups of employees.
- Demonstrated ability to influence and mentor safety leadership and employee engagement.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze complex incidents and assist with identification of root causes and effective solutions for unsafe conditions, procedures, processes, etc.
- Ability to conduct scene and job evaluations in all manner of terrain at all hours of the day and night.
- Provide safety and health consultation services to employees and leaders.
- Provide guidance and coaching to members of the Leadership team on how they can effectively lead safety in their areas of responsibility.
- Promote the concepts of Human and Organizational Performance in the organization. Understands and promotes the UNS safety strategy.
- Develops and presents contractor and new employee safety orientation programs.
- Works with the Leadership team to involve and engage employees in safety processes, initiatives, and activities.
- Assist leadership and employees in identifying, mitigating and controlling hazards in the work environment.
- Collaborate with UNS Corporate Safety regarding overall organization and department safety issues.
- Implement policies and procedures to assure awareness of, and compliance with safety and health requirements of the organization. Develop the training for these policies and procedures. Collaborate with the Training dept. to determine the most effective way to train the employees (i.e., computer based training (CBT) or present live)
- Coordinate audits of health and safety programs within the organization to identify and control significant loss producing exposure.
- Keep informed on all existing and proposed changes in health and safety regulations.
- Develop training on relevant safety and health issues and present to employees monthly.
- Promote communication programs to enhance and encourage employee awareness of safety and health issues.
- Serve as a technical consultant to departments in matters related to safety and health issues.
- Facilitates incident investigations, develops, and presents detailed reports on the events, contextual and causal factors, and event learnings.
- Facilitates Learning Teams to promote and foster organizational learning.
- Provides feedback to employees for safety related issues.
- Develops safety meeting material. Presents this material as needed.
- Participates in Safety Risk Self-Assessment (Safety Process Analysis) within UNS.
- Develops, recommends and implements training, production, and safety programs to improve knowledge and effectiveness of personnel.
- Coordinates departmental activities with other areas throughout Company, as required, to insure a cooperative effort on all tasks.
- Represents department and sections on various committees, as necessary, to ensure that favorable associations continue. Disseminates appropriate information resulting from committee conclusions.
- Monitors literature from federal, state, and local areas that affect the utility industry.
- Assist in evaluation and purchase of safety material, tools and equipment to be used by various groups.
- Lead safety incident investigations and provide clear, concise, accurate investigative reports.
- Act as point of contact for Fire Insurance inspections at all TPP facilities.
- Supports the preparation and administration of the TPP Safety budget which ensures a cost effective use of resources.
- This position may provide services to affiliates of the Company subject to the UNS Energy Code of Conduct and the related Policies and Procedures
- Ensures that the Company’s management principles, policies and programs are consistently practiced and continually support the Affirmative Action Plan.
- Complies with and administer the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with diverse groups across functional lines. Must have high level of interpersonal skills to handle sensitive and confidential situations. Position continually requires demonstrated poise, tact and diplomacy.
- Proficient in the use of personal computer applications, including but not limited to, Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- In addition to the qualifications required for Level I, listed above:
- 5+ years of relevant safety experience or designation as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP)
- A bachelor’s degree in safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related field
- Oversees and assures that all activities are performed in a manner which optimizes costs and efficiencies for the organization.

Serve as a safety resource to the Plant Manager, Superintendent, Supervisors, and Employees. Actively lead the development, implementation of safety programs, policies, procedures, and initiatives that will support employees working to build safety capacity. In doing this, this position will also ensure compliance with all applicable local, state and federal laws, regulations and standards concerning safety and health, as well as applicable standards set forth by the Arizona Corporation Commission. This position will collaborate with the Corporate Safety team, and the Springerville Generating Station (SGS) Safety team to ensure alignment with the Corporate Safety Strategy and implementation of Generation Division safety initiatives. This position assists the training group in all aspects of safety training development and presentation. As a critical safety resource at Tucson Power Production, this position will serve as a safety coach, safety trainer, and mentor for all employees and members of the leadership team.
