Developing, implementing, and reviewing a 3 to 12-month financial and/or physical strategy and delivering the agreed outcomes for the West Desk

Accountable for identifying and mitigating enterprise risk associated with West RT Trading

Asset management and leveraging asset optimization to maximize the gross margin and the value of TransAlta's energy assets while respecting risk limitations, safety, and compliance guidelines

Managing and developing positive relationships with existing customers

Determining areas of growth within trading parameters, including geographic, time, and fuel growth opportunities
-
Dynamically optimizing corporate positions
-
Understanding and maintaining strict compliance to all TransAlta's policies and procedures and applicable market regulations, rules, laws, business practices, and other guidelines

University degree in Commerce, Economics, Computer Science, or Engineering is preferred

Understanding of financial risk measures

Energy derivative understanding

Understanding of Energy Market Fundamentals

Ability to make decisions quickly and mitigate risks while ensuring compliance with prescribed parameters

Demonstrated knowledge of energy markets, with expert knowledge of Western physical and financial markets

Ability to identify areas of growth and develop and implement plans/actions to achieve that growth

Demonstrated knowledge of trading compliance requirements and ability to enforce these requirements within the team

Ability to work collaboratively across the Western Energy trading team to meet growth targets, operationalize new commercial initiatives and find efficiencies across the teams while working within risk parameters

Successful completion of applicable background checks is a condition of employment

ABOUT THE ROLE
We are currently seeking a Trader to join our West Real-Time Trading Desk. Reporting directly to the Supervisor, West RT Trading, the Real Time Trader is accountable for trading and scheduling energy across geographically diverse markets with multiple counterparties and ISOs throughout Central and Western North America. Traders are expected to optimize assets and corporate positions while mitigating risks and ensuring the integrity of firm contract obligations. Traders are responsible for developing and executing short-term physical and financial power strategies to ensure the overall goals, growth targets, and objectives of Energy Marketing are met.
This is a full-time in-office position located at our head office in Downtown Calgary. This role follows a rotating day and night work schedule.
