      The City of Stockton is seeking to fill one (1) Traffic Signal Electrician Trainee vacancy in the Public Works Department. The Traffic Signal Electrician Trainee will maintain and repair malfunctioning traffic signals, speed feedback signs, lighted crosswalks, city owned traffic cameras, and streetlights. The candidate will operate bucket/lift trucks, build and assemble traffic signals and streetlight hardware and perform annual preventative maintenance on traffic signals. Other responsibilities include repairing and replacing damaged traffic signals and streetlight poles, as well as damaged underground conduits, underground wires and overhead wires. The candidate will assist on emergency callbacks outside of normal working hours, including nights weekends as needed.

      The City of Stockton Public Works Department currently has two (2) vacancies for the Traffic Signal Electrician Trainee position. The candidate will work a City of Stockton 9/80 schedule: 6:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. Fridays, with alternating Fridays off. The candidate in this position must be willing to work overtime and off-hours shifts in emergency situations as needed.
      Incumbents in this position are included in the Civil Service system, in a "for-cause" employment status, and are represented by Operating Engineers Local No. 3, Trades and Maintenance Unit (Classified/Represented)

      Prior to appointment, eligible candidates may be required to submit to and successfully pass a background investigation, which will include fingerprinting and a medical examination which includes a back evaluation.

      Veteran's Preference:

      This position is eligible to receive five (5) Veteran's Preference Points for entrance into the Civil Service. Veteran's Preference will not be granted on the promotional list. If you believe you may qualify for Veteran's Preference, a DD-214 Member 4 copy indicating at least 181 consecutive days of service must be received in the Human Resources office (see supplemental questionnaire for details in submitting DD-214 copy) by the final filing deadline.

      Under general supervision, performs installation, maintenance and repair of a wide variety of electrical and electronic equipment used in street lighting and traffic signals; field wiring; circuits, controls, various related systems; operates a variety of hand and power tools and electronic equipment and instruments; performs related work as assigned.
      This is the entry-level class in the Traffic Signal Electrician series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of duties in the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals. Subsequent to training, incumbents will work under general supervision performing all aspects of streetlight repair and maintenance. This class is alternately staffed with Traffic Signal Electricians, and incumbents may advance to the higher level after successfully completing a one-year probationary period and gaining two additional years of experience as a Traffic Signal Electrician Trainee. Incumbents must also meet the educational requirements in order to advance to the position of Traffic Signal Electrician.

      Education/Experience :
      Possession of a high school diploma or GED and one year of working experience in the maintenance and repair of electronics or electrical devices and equipment.
      Other Requirements :
      • Must possess a valid California driver's license.
      • Incumbent must possess 18 semester units of coursework in electricity or electronics within 36 months of employment as a condition of continued employment.
      The Examination:

      Applicants who qualify in terms of relevant work experience and education, that best fit the needs of the City, will be invited to participate in the examination process. The examination process will include a written examination weighted 100%. However, the City reserves the right to utilize alternative testing methods if deemed necessary. Candidates must receive a minimum passing score of 70%, as determined by the relative performance of all candidates in all portions of the examination. In the event of identical ratings, candidates' names will be arranged in order of application date/time, and, if the same, then arranged alphabetically.
