      Main duties of the job

      Applications are invited for a trainee counselling psychologist / practitioner psychologist to work part-time 1 day per week 0.2 wte at the Royal Brompton Hospital providing psychology services to adults under the care of the cardiology, surgery and critical care services on an outpatient basis; these include people living with congenital, inherited and acquired heart conditions, people undergoing heart and lung surgery, and people recovering after critical illness linked to cardiac or respiratory failure.

      This is an exciting opportunity to join an established psychology service in cardiology, surgery and critical care, working as part of a multi-disciplinary team at a specialist cardio-respiratory centre in Chelsea, London. Clinical work involves provision of psychological support for patients and families living with long term health conditions to manage health and treatment, this can include support around the time of diagnosis, support adjusting to treatment regimes, preparing for surgery and recovery after, management of health and treatment-related distress, and psychological support in relation to mortality and end of life issues.

      The appointee will receive professional management and clinical supervision from a lead psychologist and will be part of a team of psychologists working in physical health at the hospital and a wider professional network of psychologists across hospital sites within Guys and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust. There will be opportunities to attend psychology meetings, training sessions and to continue professional development. The appointee will gain clinical experience of working with long-term physical health problems and within specialties of cardiology, surgery and critical care. Training will be provided as part of the role to support the development of skills, knowledge and competences. The post holder will work under clinical supervision within professional practice and Trust guidelines.
