      Job summary

      Medical Physics provides scientific and technical support to a wide range of clinical and laboratory services in the Trust and to many external clients. With a large staff of scientific and technical personnel, and good facilities, the Department provides advice and support in applying physical science and engineering to a wide range of techniques and facilities in health care. The post holder would be well supported to pursue clinical scientist registration either through route 2 or as an in-service STP trainee. If following the in service STP route it is anticipated this would begin after approximately 1 year in post

      Main duties of the job

      You will be working in the Radiation Safety and Radiology Physics Section of the Medical Physics Department and primarily based at the Guy's Hospital site, although completing work assignments at any of the Trust locations and for a range of external contracts. The Radiation Safety team comprises of experienced scientists and technicians whose aim is to ensure the quality, safety and effectiveness of the use of radiation on patients in healthcare. A wide range of advice and support is offered for work including: X-rays, radioisotopes, lasers and microwaves. An important part of this work is to ensure that the Trust and external clients follow relevant legislation and guidelines.

The post holder will have opportunity to develop skills and knowledge in laser safety, personal dosimetry, equipment calibration, sealed and unsealed radioactive source work. Training will be provided in all of these areas with the scope of the role expanding as training proceeds.

      • Good (1st or 2nd class) undergraduate Honours degree in a relevant pure or applied science

      Desirable

      • Postgraduate qualification in relevant subject
      • Registration as a Clinical Technologist

      Experience

      Essential

      • Working knowledge or experience of the techniques employed to measure the performance and radiological safety of standard X ray imaging equipment.
      • Working knowledge of how to measure the leakage from sealed radioactive sources.

      Desirable

      • Experience ior knowledge of carrying out laser safety audits
      • Experience or knowledge n conducting environmental dose monitoring
      • Experience or knowledge of performing patient radiation dose audits

      • Broad understanding of patient and staff risks from ionising and laser radiation
      • Working knowledge of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines e.g. IRR2017, IRMER2017, ISO9001, Medical and Dental Guidance Notes
