      Independent Anaesthetic Trainee Position (6 months)

      Where you'll be working
      Auburn Hospital is a 155 bed acute care health facility, including a 10 bed Close Observation Unit, on the eastern border of West Sydney Local Health District. It is about 11 km from Westmead Hospital. Types of surgery provided at Auburn include General Surgery, Plastics Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, ENT surgery and Orthopaedic surgery. Auburn Hospital has a 24/7 Emergency Department, as well as Special Care Nursery, General Medicine and Surgery.
      The Anaesthetic Department provides services for about 9,600 surgical procedures a year, with a large proportion of day surgery patients, and 1,600 deliveries a year in the birth unit. Auburn is a trauma bypass hospital with trauma patients from the area usually taken directly to Westmead Hospital.
      Auburn is affiliated with the University of Notre Dame as a teaching hospital for medical students. Auburn patients come from a diverse range of ethnic groups including Middle Eastern, South East Asian, African and Pacific Islander as well as Anglo Saxon. 78% of the Auburn population are from Non-English speaking backgrounds. Interpreter services are readily available.
      What you'll be doing
      Provide anaesthetic services including pre-admission clinic, operating theatre, post anaesthetic care and pain management, consultation services and epidural service for birth unit. Attend advanced life support and cardiac arrest calls.
      Detailed Job Description:
      • Work in the Department of Anaesthesia as an anaesthetic trainee (well supervised and ANZCA accredited for 12 months).
      • Participate in night and weekend anaesthetic on-call roster (excellent consultant support and supervision) on a 1 in 5 basis.
      • Participate in assessment, investigation and preparation of patients for anaesthesia/surgery in the pre-admission clinic, emergency department and other areas of the hospital as required.
      • Participate in the cardiac arrest call and other emergency calls as required. Produce and maintain appropriate clinical records, both paper based and electronic, and participate in clinical audit.
      • Participate in the educational, teaching, quality assurance, and occupational health and safety programmes and meetings within the Department and the Hospital.
      • Comply with NSW Health, Western Sydney Health, Auburn Hospital and Anaesthetic Department policies and procedures.
      • Participate in regular processes of performance appraisal.
      • Maintain good communication and working relationships with supervising consultants, colleagues, nursing and paramedical staff

      The Training Program
      Each anaesthetic Trainee is one of 5 Trainees.

      Three are non-rotational and may be on the independent scheme and two rotates 6-monthly from Westmead. There will be three extra residents rotating from other specialties. The Trainees report to the supervising anaesthetist of the day in-hours, and the on-call anaesthetist out of hours. They participate in departmental meetings and clinical review, present papers and talks at departmental meetings, attend tutorials and seminars, and are subject to regular assessment and guidance by senior members of the department.

      Trainees are further assessed for satisfactory progress by the supervisor of training. The rotational Trainees are given assessments which are returned to their departments at Westmead. The Head of Department, Supervisor of Training, and WBA Assessors are approved by the ANZ College of Anaesthetists in those positions.

      Selection Criteria:

      1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia
      2. Minimum 3 years of post-graduate experience with at least 2 years in Australia
      3. Good oral and written communication skills
      4. Recent Australian experience in anaesthetics, critical care, HDU or ICU
      5. Competence in cannulation, basic airway management, interpretation of blood and blood gas results. Basic life support skills expected. Advanced life support skills and EMST attendance advantageous
      6. Ability to participate in a 1 in 5 out of hours “on call” roster involving nights and weekends. Must live within 20-30 minutes of hospital.
      7. Registration or intended registration with ANZ College of Anaesthetists as a Basic Trainee.
      8. Research or clinical governance activity or interest.
