      TRANSFER STATION DRIVER

      FT/REGULAR

      NON EXEMPT - LEVEL 5

      SALARY: $15.40

      GENERAL DEFINITION: The primary purpose of this position is to safely operate a Roll–off twin axils Truck and Curb-Side Tender Truck assigned to transfer routes. The equipment is diesel fueled and is used to transport 40-yard containers of solid waste to the E.P.A. approved landfill, and pick-up municipal solid waste in the community.

      SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under general supervision of the Solid Waste Program Manager.

      SUPERVISION EXERCISED: No Supervisory Duties.

      DUTIES:

      Operates Roll–Off Truck or Curb–Side Tender Truck.

      • Drives the Curbside Tender truck for refuse collection services in the community.
      • Performs day-to-day work independently and reports major problems or requests assistance at the incumbent’s discretion and judgment.
      • Drives the Roll-Off Truck to transport 40-yard container and all municipal waste to Gallup or Thoreau, or a designated Regional Solid Waste Authority.
      • Conducts pre-trip inspections on all trucks and assures trucks and equipment are in safe working conditions.
      • Reports vehicle/truck/equipment problems to immediate supervisor for corrective action.
      • Skill in the operation of the trucks and ability to handle different sets of controls requiring good eye-hand coordination.
      • Responsible for performing minor repairs, preventive maintenance, and servicing of equipment in accordance with established maintenance manuals and schedules, including cleaning of vehicle windshields, license plates, head and tail light areas from visual obstruction.
      • Medium to heavy physical effort is required, frequently climbing in and out of the cab at the height of approximately six (6) feet, occasionally lift, push, pull, and carry objects.
      • Light to medium physical effort is used in bending, turning, squatting, pushing, pulling, twisting in servicing and performing minor repairs on equipment.
      • Operator is subject to long periods of sitting while operating the equipment.

      Knowledge of safety rules and regulations and skill in operating the equipment in a safe manner.

      • Comply with State of New Mexico and Zuni Reservation traffic laws.
      • Follow safety precautions before operating and/or while performing lubrication, maintenance and repairs on the equipment.
      • After transport and disposal of waste at municipal areas, driver ensures tarps are folded and bungee cords are safely secured in the back end of the vehicle.

      Monitor incoming solid waste

      • Check for various types of corrosive, explosive, reactive, flammable, toxic or hazardous waste.
      • Refuses to allow or accept prohibited material to be placed in the compactor unit or the 40-yard containers if hazardous materials are suspected.
      • Notifies supervisor of illegal dumping in community, and other problems.

      Performs other duties as assigned or delegated by the immediate supervisor.

      • May be required to attend and participate in meetings as scheduled.
      • May assist or perform the duties of an Uncertified Transfer Station Operator as needed.
      • Ability to monitor scale operation when necessary.

      MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

      KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to follow written or oral instructions. Ability to read and write in English to maintain efficient records of mileage, operating hours, restrictions and requirements under the Environmental Protection Act. Ability to perform light to medium physical efforts is required for operating and maintenance of the equipment. Establish and maintain good working relationships with tribal employees, outside agencies, and the general public.

      TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: High school graduate or equivalent (GED) with two (2) years experience in operation of heavy trucks or heavy equipment.

      LICENSE AND CERTIFICATES: Must have a valid NM Class A, B, or C Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with NO DUI/DWI convictions within the past three (3) years. Driving is an essential part of the duties.

      • Must be Certified as a New Mexico Transfer Station Operator or obtain certification within one (1) year of employment.

      PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Candidates must be in excellent physical condition. Visual and auditory acuity required. Position requires sitting and driving in heavy duty truck for majority of working hours. Must be able to lift 20-50 lbs. without assistance. Position involves walking, stooping, squatting, bending, kneeling, climbing, crawling. Position is subject to odors and fumes from solid waste, dust, pollen, and other pollutants from chemicals, paints, tar, etc. Position is subject to outdoor work and in various weather conditions. Subject to noise and vibration from various equipment and other tools.

      SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Position is subject to Pre-Employment drug testing. Position is Safety Sensitive and will be subject to random drug testing for duration of employment. Must submit to and successfully pass a thorough background check including FBI Fingerprint Check.
