The Department of Public Works & Transportation (DPW&T) is currently seeking a highly qualified applicant to fill the Transit Operator (Transit Operator A) position in the Senior Transportation Services Division.
About the Position:
This is an entry-level, skilled craft position, whereby the incumbent operates commercial passenger buses, multi-passenger vans, and ancillary equipment (wheelchair lift, two-way radio, mobile tablet) for the purpose of transporting customers with special needs (senior citizens, persons with disabilities) to assigned destinations. Incumbents are evaluated based on the safe and efficient operation of vehicles and must adhere to all safety and traffic rules, regulations, policies, and procedures to ensure the well-being of customers, employees, self, and the general public. The incumbent must demonstrate a professional, pleasant, courteous, and helpful demeanor towards the public at all times and must be able to maintain composure in stressful situations. Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions with exposure to the elements. Incumbent must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50lbs on a regular basis and must wear and maintain a uniform and safety equipment. Work is performed and evaluated in accordance with agency standards, rules, and regulations, under the general supervision of the Transit Service Coordinator. DPW&T employees are considered "Essential" and are required to participate in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program, during natural and man-made disasters, and during special operations/activities as assigned. Essential employees are expected to report for work or remain at work when other employees are granted Administrative Leave.What You'll Do:• Operate passenger vehicles in a safe manner, complying with Motor Vehicle and Transit Local, State, and Federal regulations;
• Conduct routine bus and van inspections of assigned vehicle before/after use according to safety and operating procedures;
• Maintain communication by radio with Dispatch and Transit Service Coordinators to report transit vehicle breakdowns, accidents, interruptions in service or other information vital to maintaining efficient transit operations;
• Provide customer service and courteous interaction with passengers by responding to inquiries about schedules, routes, fares, connections to other routes and services, ridership promotions and transit service policies;
• Assist passengers boarding/disembarking when necessary;
• Assist with securing disabled wheelchair patrons;
• Perform daily service/maintenance and maintains the cleanliness of vehicle exterior/interior throughout the shift;
• Participate as an Essential employee in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program and other emergency or special activities; and
• Perform other tasks and duties assigned, which may not be specifically listed in the position description; however, are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work.What You'll Need:
• High School diploma or G.E.D.,
• Plus one (1) year of paratransit/transit operation experience, which includes direct customer service experience.An equivalent combination of experience and training will be considered. EACH APPLICANT MUST INCLUDE INFORMATION THAT CLEARLY DEMONSTRATES THE ABOVE
QUALIFICATIONS FOR THIS POSITION.CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Upon selection, the candidate must:
1. Possess, maintain, and submit a copy of Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air-brake and passenger endorsement together with a current DOT physical certification card;
2. Submit a current Motor Vehicle Administration driving record;
3. Possess safety shoes meeting Departmental requirements;
4. Pass a thorough physical examination;
5. Pass an alcohol and drug test;
6. Be willing to work outdoors in various weather conditions; and
7. Participate as an "Essential" employee in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program and other emergency, or special activities as assigned.

DURATION OF ELIGIBILITY : Candidates will be selected from a temporary register of eligible candidates, which will become effective approximately four (4) weeks after the closing date. Once a selection has been made, the register will expire.
