      Performs advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines.

      Essential Duties:

      Transportation Engineer III and IV

      • Answers technical and policy questions related to bridge inspection and maintains bridge inspection data; analyzes data and provides summaries.
      • Coordinates with local officials on critical findings involving structures which are not under state jurisdictions to have them posted, repaired or closed to the traveling public.
      • Inspects structures for impact damage and/or construction problems and may design emergency shoring to prevent collapse of damaged structures.
      • Makes presentations and represents TxDOT.
      • May serve as a lead worker.
      • Performs inspections, structural evaluations and analyses of bridges and related structures that have appraisal and condition ratings or are recommended for closure.
      • Provides technical assistance in drainage design, resolution of drainage complaints, hydraulics evaluations and other hydrology matters.
      • Rates and monitors load carrying capacities of bridges.
      • Recommends bridge replacement, bridge rehabilitation and repair of damaged bridges.
      • Reviews designs and detailed drawings of bridges and related structures prepared by other engineers and technicians.
      • Schedules, assigns and oversees bridge inspection activities.
      • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

      Additional Duties for Transportation Engineer IV include:

      • Develops short-term and long-term goals and coordinates planning activities and resources required to meet goals.
      • Maintains a critical bridge list and coordinates with the Bridge Division, area engineers and other district staff on critical findings involving state maintained bridges to have them posted, repaired and/or closed to the traveling public.
      • Monitors contract performance, evaluates contract deliverables, reviews billing documentation, monitors the consultant's compliance with the terms of the contract, and/or prepares and delivers a written evaluation of the consultant's performance.
      • Recommends prioritization of bridge replacement, bridge rehabilitation and repair of damaged bridges.

      Minimum Qualifications:

      Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.


      Experience:

      Transportation Engineer III:

      6 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

      Transportation Engineer IV:

      7 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications


      Licenses and Certifications:

      • Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
      • Licensed Prof Engineer*

      *Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

      • Researching, analyzing, and interpreting policies and state and federal laws and regulations specific to functional area.
      • Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external.
      • Planning, coordinating and handling multiple projects within area of responsibility to meet short and long term deadlines.
      • Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others.
      • Using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems.
      • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others.

      Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

      • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
      • Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs.
      • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.
      • Crouching-bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine.
      • Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words.
