      An Overview
      The Transportation Planner performs highly visible work in support of the City’s transportation planning programs and goals. This position oversees the City’s paratransit program, Alexandria DOT, and analyzes data and draws from best planning principles to improve the service. The position also supports GO Alex, the City’s Transportation Demand Management (TDM) program promoting alternative transportation modes, and assists with managing Transportation Management Plans (TMP) for new development that are approved through the planning and development review process. This position is part of a four-person team and performs work under the administrative direction of the TDM Program Manager and Division Chief of Mobility Services.

      What you should bring
      The person in this position should be a self-motivated individual in the field of public sector planning, who takes initiative to manage and advance the City’s Paratransit and TDM programs, continuously improve processes, and get the job done. This person should have comprehensive knowledge and understanding of transportation planning principles, paratransit programs, TDM policies, and grant management. The employee should be adept in project management; able to collaborate, establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, boards, commissions, contractors, and the general public; and be able to present technical information effectively, both orally and in writing.

      The Opportunity – Examples of work
      1. Manages the DOT Paratransit Program and draws from transportation planning principles and best practices to make the service more effective
      2. Manages contracts and contractors (Call Center, Transportation provider, software provider)
      3. Conducts research, data collection and analysis related to the paratransit program, including paratransit rider and trip data, to ensure the program is operating effectively and identify program changes as needed
      4. Coordinates with WMATA and conducts data collection and analysis related to MetroAccess ridership data
      5. Applies for grant funding to support TDM and paratransit
      6. Supports management and implementation of funding received from new development through the TMP Program
      7. Implements a Travel Training program
      8. Lead Paratransit communication development and incorporate user experience feedback on GO Alex operations
      9. Coordinates with TDM and Paratransit partners in the region to identify best practices and share information about successful programs and policies.
      10. Represents the Department, Division, and GO Alex team at inter-department meetings and civic associations/organizations.
      11. Represents the City at regional and national conferences to share information about the City’s successes.
      12. Makes presentations to City Council, Planning Commission, Transportation Commission, and other boards and community groups related to TDM and Paratransit policies and programs.

      The Department of Transportation and Environmental Services (T&ES) strives to improve the overall quality of life within the City of Alexandria through the development of superior transportation options. The Mobility Services Division helps manage and promote the City’s many transportation options through policies and programs related to parking, bikeshare, scooters, paratransit, and other modes. Within T&ES and across the City, we work together to foster a thriving Alexandria and work toward a culture that supports each of us and inspires excellence.Four-Year College Degree from an accredited college or university in regional, or urban Planning, or a closely related field such as Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Geography, Urban Studies, Public Administration, Physical Sciences, Historic Preservation, or Environmental Studies; three years of experience or Master's degree with 1 year experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.


      To be considered as an ideal candidate, one should possess a bachelor’s degree in a field listed above and four years of experience; or a master’s degree and two-year experience; experience with transportation planning, street design, and transportation policy; familiarity with GIS; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.This position requires the successful completion of pre-employment background checks.

      This position requires three days of onsite work and is eligible for two days of remote work, with approval from supervisor.
