      The purpose of this position is to perform technical duties in the trimming and removal of trees in support of the installation, repair, and maintenance of electric distribution equipment. Success in this position provides for the safe, reliable, and cost-effective delivery of electric utilities.

      The work consists of related duties in the pruning and removal of trees. Work performed in inclement weather contributes to the complexity of the position.

      Major Duties

      • Trims and removes trees to protect city electrical lines; clears right of way for the installation of new lines; cuts limbs and operates chipper.
      • Maintains equipment, including bucket truck, saws, ropes, climbing gear, saddle, pruners, axe, and safety gear.
      • Places barricades and signs at job sites.
      • Trims and digs out protruding tree roots.
      • Responds to after-hours emergency calls.
      • Performs other related duties as assigned.

      • Guidelines include city ordinances, policies, and procedures, relevant federal and state laws and regulations, OSHA standards, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

      Tree Trimmer I

      $33,586.72 - $58,879.76

      Education/Experience Requirements

      • Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations.
      • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
      • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated and a valid driver's license is required with the ability to acquire a Class A CDL within six months of hire.

      Knowledge Requirements
      • Knowledge of the equipment, materials, principles and practices used in the safe trimming and removal of trees.
      • Knowledge of relevant safety procedures and guidelines.
      • Skill in the use of hydraulic saw, chain saw, weight lines and other equipment used in the pruning and removal of trees.
      • Skill in the operation of a bucket truck and digger derrick.
      • Skill in establishing priorities and organizing work.
      • Skill in public and interpersonal relations.
      • Skill in oral and written communication.
      Tree Trimmer II

      Education/Experience Requirements

      • Any combination and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in working at heights and in the general care, pruning and removal of trees around high voltage electric lines, including some supervisory experience.
      • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated and a valid driver's license is required with the ability to acquire a Class A CDL within six months of hire.
      Knowledge Requirements
      • Thorough knowledge of tree trimming methods;
      • Thorough knowledge of tree surgery techniques;
      • Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work;
      • Ability to operate a truck with a hydraulic boom;
      • Skilled in the use and care of ropes, climber hooks, riggings and tools commonly used in tree trimming and felling operations;
      • Ability to climb trees and to work effectively in precarious positions at considerable heights above the ground for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather and working conditions;
      • Ability to deal courteously with the public.

      Tree Trimmer III
      $42,993.84 - $75,424.27

      Education/Experience Requirements

      • Any combination and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in working at heights and in the general care, pruning and removal of trees around high voltage electric lines, including some supervisory experience.
      • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated and a valid driver's license is required with the ability to acquire a Class A CDL within six months of hire.

      • Thorough knowledge of tree surgery techniques;

      • Ability to train and supervise subordinate tree trimmers;
      • Ability to operate a truck with a hydraulic boom;
      • Skill in the use and care of ropes, climber hooks, riggings and tools commonly used in tree trimming and felling operations;
      • Ability to climb trees and to work effectively in precarious positions at considerable heights above the ground for extended periods of time, often under unfavorable weather and working conditions;
      • Ability to deal courteously with the public.
      • The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather, while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, or walking.
      • May require the use of protective devices.
      • The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders and utility poles, operates tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and must distinguish between shades of color.
