      Job summary

Applications are invited for the post of Specialty Registrar at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust.

The successful candidate will complement our existing cohort of ST3+, Speciality and Staff Grade Doctors, supporting a team of 27 Consultant Orthopaedic surgeons working across both trust sites, assisting in trauma and elective theatres, supporting clinics and providing cover to orthopaedic wards and front of house services.

The post is classed as non-training grade, however, the department is fully committed to provide equivalent training opportunities to the post-holder with a named clinical supervisor and regular appraisals. There is great opportunity to be involved with departmental audit, research and quality improvement projects. The successful candidate will gain excellent clinical experience and have the opportunity to further their skills and assist in both trauma and elective theatres and fracture and elective clinics.

      Main duties of the job

The STSFT Trauma and Orthopaedics service provides services to the populations of South Tyneside and Sunderland delivered from two hospital sites, South Tyneside District hospital and Sunderland Royal hospital. The department provides services across the full range of orthopaedic sub-specialties within Orthopaedics including spinal surgery and paediatrics, and the post-holder will have exposure to a varied case mix. We are supported by an Orthogeriatric team, a team of Orthopaedic Practitioners and specialist physiotherapists, and a team providing Trauma Co-ordination and Fracture Liaison services.

The successful candidate will be expected to work within a clinical governance framework, having an active role in clinical risk management, audit and the annual assessment and appraisal process. The post-holder will be based at one of our two main hospital sites (posts are available on both sites), although flexibility to cover across sites will be required. Once in post, the successful applicant will be expected to be a part of the Orthopaedic on call middle grade rota. At Sunderland Royal Hospital this is a 1/13 resident rota, whilst at South Tyneside it is a 1/5 nn-resident rota.

  • About the company

National Health Service (NHS) is the umbrella term for the publicly-funded healthcare systems of the United Kingdom (UK). The founding principles were that services should be comprehensive, universal and free at the point of delivery—a health service based on clinical need, not ability to pay. Each service provides a comprehensive range of health services, free at the point of use for people ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom apart from dental treatment and optical care.
