      POSITION SUMMARY:

      This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The lifeguard at Tuhey Pool maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals. The lifeguard will protect the safety of all swimmers in the pool area first by preventing accidents and second by responding to emergencies quickly and efficiently to minimize the danger to those involved.

      ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

      1. Provides excellent service to members, guests, and program participants in the Y, contributing to member retention. Be courteous and use individual names when speaking to all patrons.
      2. Maintains cleanliness and organization of the environment, including but not limited to locker rooms, entire pool deck and grassy areas, concessions and front office.
      3. Develops and maintains positive relationships with volunteers and patrons and helps patrons connect with one another and the Y.
      4. Serves others by intentionally welcoming, connecting, and supporting patrons, and inviting them to get involved and give back to the community.
      5. Handles and resolves concerns and informs supervisor of unusual situations or unresolved issues.
      6. Applies all YMCA policies dealing with patron services.
      7. Stays alert and continually scans the pool at all times.
      8. Is always “rescue ready” with the rescue tube properly worn and a hip pack, with a rescue mask and gloves, also worn.
      9. Enforces all facility rules in a courteous but firm manner to keep patrons safe.
      10. Acts immediately in emergencies either in the water or on the pool deck.
      11. In the event of an accident, follow YMCA emergency procedures as outlined, providing first aid and CPR as necessary. Contact necessary YMCA personal as the situation requires and stay on the scene to coordinate services until relieved by a YMCA professional director. Complete the necessary paperwork to document the incident.
      12. Knows and practices all rescues, Basic Life Support techniques and Basic First Aid.
      13. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor or management staff.
      14. Upholds guidelines as outlines in the Employee Handbook of the Association.
      15. Attends designated trainings and staff meetings.

      QUALIFICATIONS:

      Current lifeguard, CPR, AED, and First Aid certification before being hired.

      • Child Abuse Prevention Training prior to first shift.
      • Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
      • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic
        segments of the community
      • Must demonstrate all rescue skills before being hired

      • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
