      Job Purpose and Summary

      This is skilled work in the operation, maintenance and repair of highway tunnels for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC). An employee in this classification keeps highway tunnels properly patrolled, maintained and repaired. Work also requires responsibility for keeping the tunnels free of obstruction. Employees receive written and oral instructions from a supervisor. Work is inspected in progress and upon completion by a supervisor.

      Essential Functions & Responsibilities

      Operates assigned equipment, wreckers and other trucks or equipment for the maintenance, cleaning and repair of tunnels.

      Patrols tunnels and observes for proper safety equipment and/or unusual circumstances. Practices proper safety methods.

      Performs security checks in order to keep traffic moving at all times.

      Handles emergency situations that may occur within the tunnel such as accidents and breakdowns.

      Compiles reports and logs.

      Assists in maintaining the tunnels and portal buildings including floors, walls, motors, pumps, fans, appliances and vending areas.

      Assists customers and directs traffic when necessary.

      Utilizes a PTC radio system for transmitting and receiving information.

      Operates tunnel gears, switches, equipment and maintains records of operation.

      Paints control room, motor room, stairways, garage areas and doors.

      Performs other related duties as assigned.

      Qualifications

      High school diploma or equivalent certification.

      Must possess a valid Class A commercial driver’s license (CDL)
      OR
      Possess a valid Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) with a Class A learner’s permit. Must pass the Class A CDL road test by the end of their trial period (current employees) or probationary period (new hires).

      The incumbent must possess an N or X endorsement on their CDL or permit to authorize them to operate tank vehicles.

      The incumbent may not have any of the following restrictions on their CDL or permit:
      E – Prohibits the operation of manual transmission commercial vehicles
      L or Z – Prohibits driving a commercial vehicle equipped with airbrakes
      O – Prohibits the driver from driving a truck tractor/semi-trailer combination

      Must possess a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT Physical Card).

      Physical Demands and Work Environment

      Position demands include frequent speaking, writing and reading reports. Position may demand stamina to work long hours in emergency situations, adverse weather conditions or extended work assignments. Lifts, carries heavy objects or exerts forces equivalent to lifting up to 75 pounds. Sufficient physical strength to lift and move heavy objects. Position requires frequent travel and/or fieldwork with exposure to roadway traffic. Office environment with low levels of noise, adequate lighting and comfortable temperature. Field environment may include exposure to moderately adverse and undesirable environmental conditions. Works in extreme weather conditions. Physical environment is generally safe, but safety equipment or precautions must be followed in field conditions.
