      Located within the Office of Health & Wellness, the Physical Education Team oversees all BPS Aquatics swim instruction programs for student participation in both high school and elementary-level, non-competitive aquatic activities. BPS Physical Education programs provide all students, regardless of race, gender, or ethnicity, opportunities to develop physically, mentally, and emotionally in controlled, safe activities both inside and outside of the traditional classroom.

      Under general supervision of School leader and support and training from the Offices of Health and Wellness and Facilities the Lifeguard’s primary responsibility includes guarding the pool, ensuring the safety of all students, enforcing the pool rules, maintaining cleanliness and sanitary conditions in and around the pool facility and implementing the emergency protocols as needed.

      Responsibilities:

      • Guard the pool, including the supervision of students and the entire pool facility in accordance with local board of health regulations. Ensure a lifeguard is always on duty whenever the pool is in use.
      • Fulfill daily cleaning and operations in the pool area, including but not limited to cleaning the pool deck, keeping the pool office clean, checking and cleaning the gutters, vacuuming the pool, inspecting and maintaining safety equipment, and checking the mechanical room.
      • Prevent emergencies by scanning the pool in a continuous and consistent manner, warning swimmers of improper or dangerous activities and behavior, and enforcing pool rules and regulations to ensure adherence to code of conduct
      • Perform assists or rescues as needed; administer CPR and/or artificial respiration, if necessary.
      • Inspect the pool facilities, equipment, and w ater to en sure that pools meet all health and safety standards, including a clean and safe environment, appropriate air and water temperature, chemical balance, and timely pool water testing (minimum of twice a day)
      • Contact BPS Facilities Aquatics Manager immediately to alert them of any concerns regarding the health and safety standards and initiate aquatics emergency action plan as required.
      • Support with safety and risk management protocols for all aquatic programs, ensuring that swimming activities comply with district and state safety regulations.
      • Maintain accurate daily pool records and sustain sanitary conditions in and around the pool
      • Comply with the Department’s uniform regulations as required by the local health code. This includes wearing a top with the word “lifeguard” and an appropriate lifeguard bathing suit.
      • Attend all required in-service training(s).
      • Work effectively with the swim instructor and swim para(s) to ensure a safe, healthy and welcoming pool and instructional environment
      • Performs related work as required.

      Required Qualifications:

      • High school diploma or GED equivalent is required.
      • Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
      • Must hold a current American Red Cross Certification in Lifeguard Training. This Certification includes Lifeguard Skills, First Aid, and CPR/AED. These certifications must be renewed every two years.
      • Minimum of six (6) months of related work experience as a lifeguard
      • Knowledge of methods and techniques for providing on-site emergency medical services
      • Ability to judge and evaluate evolving dynamics of individuals participating in aquatic activities to immediately assess their capabilities and threats to their safety
      • Knowledge of pool health and safety standards preferred or the willingness to learn.
      • Ability to evaluate water conditions at aquatics facilities.
      • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on detail as required by the position.
      • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, attention to detail and multi-tasking skills, and be able to work under pressure and with the instructional staff.
      • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suites preferred.
      • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team-oriented environment and diverse organization, including continuously interacting and working with individuals from different backgrounds and cultures.

      Terms: School-based managerial lifeguards will work 183 days each year. The 183 day work-year will include the 183 days in which school is in session. School-based managerial employees are not eligible for vacation time or compensatory time. In the event of school cancellation due to snow or inclement weather, school-based managerial employees need not report to work.

      Salary: $46,301
