      Position Purpose

      An Ultrasound Apprentice is a student currently enrolled in the Renown Ultrasound Program. The position allows for an apprentice to productively gain knowledge and experience with direct patient care, while under the supervision of a licensed sonographer.

      The position will be a combination of didactic training as well as hands on clinical lab time. Once the apprentice has had quality time in the classroom and clinical lab, they will begin with direct patient care under the supervision of a licensed sonographer.

      The Apprentice will be learning and performing all cardiac ultrasounds and procedures within echocardiology and any disease processes in accordance with Federal, State and Joint Commission, IAC, and Renown Health standards and policies and procedures.

      The Apprentice will be performing all exams under Renown’s ultrasound protocols as established by IAC, SDMS, and AIUM and adhering to all infection control guidelines as defined by Renown. All annual training established by Renown must be completed.

      Due to the intense nature of the Renown Cardiac Ultrasound Program, the Apprentice must be able to train at variable sites, shifts, and days to ensure all areas of cardiac ultrasound are learned.

      The apprentice will learn to carry out the physician’s orders by following established protocols and care standards to insure improved patient outcomes. In conjunction with leadership, this position is responsible for delivering patient care through proper execution of care standards, physician orders, and advanced imaging skills, while supporting the vision and mission of Renown Health Systems.

      Graduation from the apprenticeship will be determined by GPA and verified skills by the Ultrasound Program Instructor.

      Nature and Scope

      The major challenges to this position include but are not limited to operate a variety of sophisticated ultrasonic imaging units and reading and reporting systems. The apprentice will review images for identification, technique, and completeness according to the governing body of that specific modality, i.e. SDMS and IAC for cardiac ultrasound.

      The Apprentice will function as a role model, and professional resource to patients, physicians, peers, and the general public in a manner consistent with the values and standards of conduct of Renown Health.

      The Apprentice is responsible for performing all types of ultrasonic examinations according to the modality he or she is specialized in and various exams specific to modality will be followed according to policy.

      The Apprentice will also learn invasive techniques such as: transesophageal echo (TEE), use of echo enhancing agents, bubble studies, and guidance for pericardial centesis etc. according to policy, and all exams including these types of exams will be followed according to policy.

      Examinations may be performed in the respective ultrasound department or any other department as required including portable exams.

      The Apprentice will perform other duties or assignments as requested by the clinical instructor including but not limited to; checking code blue carts, eye wash stations, blanket warmers, refrigerators, cleaning and maintaining equipment and the lab, and meeting all requirements set forth by our governing and accreditation bodies, Federal, State, Joint Commission, and Renown Health requirements.

      The Apprentice must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care based on physical, motor/sensory, psychosocial, and safety appropriate to patients served ranging in age from infant, child, adolescent, adult and geriatric, and meet standards of quality as measured by the unit/department age-specific competency standards.

      This position has the authority to make technical decisions that will provide the best possible sonographic image quality. This position must be proficient in the use of ultrasound imaging systems.

      This position provides direct patient care.

      Description

      Education:

      Completion of a 4-year Bachelor degree, a 2-year Associate degree or Certificate, any of which must be health and science-related.

      Anatomy and Physiology, Biology and medical terminology is preferred.

      Experience:

      Minimum one-year experience with direct patient care is preferred.

      License(s):

      None

      Certification(s):

      AHA BLS within 60 days of hire.

      Computer / Typing:

      Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computers skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
