  Job Description

  This position is contingent on contract award.

  This position will support the US Department of Veterans Affairs Critical Staffing Program. The person in this position will represent International SOS and provide services outlined below:

  International SOS is looking for an individual who is an experienced Ultrasound Technologist to care for VA members and their families. An Ultrasound Technologist operates specialized imaging equipment to create diagnostic pictures of patients' internal structures, assisting physicians in diagnosing and monitoring medical conditions. They also ensure patient safety and comfort during procedures while maintaining accurate records and images for analysis.

  Key Responsibilities

  • Contract Ultrasound Technicians shall receive patients, explain method of procedure(s), position patients, select and set technical factors, set up and adjust accessory equipment, and document necessary images.
  • Be knowledgeable of all pertinent equipment and perform duties independently as well as part of a team.
  • Set up Ultrasound exam rooms assuring that supplies and other required equipment are present and available for exams.
  • Perform related clerical duties such as sending images to the PACS, archiving images, post processing images, case editing of computer request and reports, send images and communicate with afterhours National Teleradiology Program (NTP).
  • Have knowledge of the principles of ultrasound in order to approve the acceptability or reject each scan.
  • Coordinate a variety of technical procedures that require independent judgement, ingenuity, and initiate in the application of nonionizing high frequency ultrasonic waves for diagnosis of pathology.
  • Perform a variety of examinations including but not limited to abdomen, neck, chest, extremities, OB/GYN, Vascular and Musculoskeletal studies, for the purpose of acquiring high quality examinations that assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patient medical disorders.
  • Make multiple simultaneous settings and adjustments in operation of the equipment and manually maneuvers the transducer to perform the exam to yield diagnostic images and accurate results.
  • Evaluate the nature of critical and emergency procedures in order to perform ultrasounds on the most critical patients first.
  • Coordinate patient care activities with other services as necessary to facility treatment of patients in a timely manner.
  • Explain the procedure to the patient and answer any questions to ensure complete understanding.
  • Use judgement to assess and respond to patients needs before, during, and after the procedure.
  • Maintain competency of comply with the processes for critical, semi-critical, and non-critical Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Document and follow established procedures for cleaning, disinfecting, sterilization, and preparation of RME.
  • Interpret and complete requests or instructions from radiologists, medical officers and physicians.
  • Maintain records and enter patient information using the Radiology Vista Package, and the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS).
  • Prepare the exam room, equipment and necessary supplies needed for each patient procedure.
  • Verify the patient’s identity using unique identifiers and checking the patients ID band for accuracy.
  • Obtain pertinent clinical data from the patient, electronic health record (EHR), or requisition. 3.16. Contract Ultrasound Technicians shall transfer patients from stretcher or wheelchair to exam table utilizing safe patient handling techniques, including ergonomic methods and devices.
  • Perform intra-operative ultrasound examinations to assist interventional radiologists in tumor ablation procedures in a sterile surgical environment.
  • Assist the interventional radiologist in the performance of cyst punctures, aspiration, biopsies and catheter placement for the purpose of diagnostic treatment using ultrasound techniques. This requires the use of surgical sterile techniques, syringes, needles, contrast, etc.
  • Develop and maintain patient preparation procedures so that all involved understand the proper preparations are taken to minimize delays in the examination.
  • Advise the radiologist or referring clinician of significant abnormalities that would require their immediate attention and visualization while the patient is undergoing specific examination.
  • Assist in ensuring supplies within the assigned work area are properly supplied/stocked to prevent delays in examinations due to lack of necessary equipment and supplies.
  • Notify supervisor of low-level supplies in a timely manner.
  • Communicate with nursing staff and providers In-Patient/Emergency Room regarding exams needed to be performed.
  • Maintain the operation and sanitization of ultrasound equipment and supplies as well as maintaining a neat and clean work area including desks and countertops.
  • Ensure quality assurance of each scan (positioning/label/technique/network information) prior to transmitting ultrasound images to the PAC’s network.
  • Comply with all procedures in accordance with applicable VALBHS written policies, procedures, bylaws, and medical staff protocols.
  • Have the ability to speak, understand, read, and write English fluently as well as basic computer skills.

  Qualifications

  Basic Requirements/Certifications:

  • Must possess a current American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (“RDMS”) certification
  • Must possess at least 2 years of current work experience in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
  • Must possess Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) work experience (AGFA PACS experience is preferred).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.

  Physical Requirements:

  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • Work involves sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time.
  • May require bending, stooping and lifting up to 15 lbs.

  Other Special Qualifications:

  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English to effectively communicate.
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident Card is required.
  • Pass/possess VA Public Trust Clearance.

  Pay range is based on several factors and may vary in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits. Final salary and offer will be determined by the applicant’s background, experience, skills, internal equity, and alignment with geographical market data.

  Comp: Min $29hr / Max $36/hr
