Job Description

- Provide coaching, mentoring and training to a team of Commercial Lines underwriters to further develop their underwriting capabilities and help to expand underwriters ability to seek unique solutions where possible.
- Assist with the underwriting portfolio of assigned business and provide support to the underwriting team on sophisticated accounts.
- Connect with brokers on Aviva's strategy, field calls from brokers, Aviva lawyers, and Aviva claims team.
- Provides technical expertise to internal partners.
- Build and maintain relationships cross-functionally and with external partners, to deliver outstanding broker and customer service.
- Act as a point of escalation for all underwriters.
- Assists AVP with individual branch strategy, assisting to influence top-line and bottom-line results.
- Provides technical analysis and evaluates technical skills for new hires and promotions on authority levels and work assignment
- Specialist on our wordings representing UW for Aviva.
- Authorize risks within own established authority levels.
- Maintain the quality and profitability of a portfolio through analysis and recommendations for improvement, and refer all risks outside established authority level to AVP.
- Liaise on referrals and specific underwriting issues.
- Work in conjunction with Business Development to pursue growth opportunities.
- Assist in the introduction and communication of pricing, coverage and/or product changes on time, including crafting underwriter bulletins, contributing to the development of underwriting guidelines, procedures, and manuals.
- Help identify areas of concern regarding loss ratios, risk trends, or other discrepancies, applying remediation strategies as appropriate.
- Participate in Quality Reviews and audits and provide feedback as required.
- Supervise and control UQR on a monthly basis.
- Review large losses and identify underwriting miss and respective mentor opportunities.
- Support maintenance of a cohesive UW environment in relation to filed rates and rules.
- Maintain knowledge of industry trends, developments, and regulatory changes.
- Chip in as a subject matter specialist for branch learning and development, including subject research, preparation of material and delivery of the training.
- Identify gaps in underwriting capabilities, and design and deliver solutions.
- Deliver and implement new product coverage.
- Potentially handle mid-market renewal accounts or new business.
- Orientation to new hires on Aviva UW appetite and philosophies; active participant of new hire onboarding.
- Post-secondary education (Business or related field)
- CIP/FCIP preferred
- 8-10 years’ experience in underwriting, preferably in Commercial Insurance
- Excellent leadership and mentor skills with the ability to develop expertise in the branch.
- High level knowledge of underwriting, pricing and product in key segments, i.e. Wholesaling, Manufacturing and/or Contractors
- A tried decision maker with good judgement, accompanied by ability to take well calculated risks.
- Strong level of understanding of underwriting philosophy, policy contracts, rating programs, risk information sources, underwriting/technical manual information, statuary constraints, and computer workflow procedures.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, RTM, Commercial systems and other related systems.
- Ability to interact in a professional manner to develop long-term relationships with our partners and clients.
- Ability to work with internal business partners to deliver a great broker experience and customer happiness.
- Ability to be self-motivated and proactively pursue potential business opportunities with brokers and customers.
- Ability to listen to customers’ as well as their brokers in order to effectively and efficiently meet their needs.
- Demonstrates strong presentation and facilitation skills, high degree of integrity and a solutions and service orientation

The purpose of the role is to be the underwriting conscience of the branch and be highly visible servicing brokers. Assess and evaluate more sophisticated Property and Casualty risks and apply strategies and pricing with regards to underwriting. Acts as the subject matter authority within their specialized area of expertise. There is an overall accountability to drive profitable growth through quality underwriting, provide in depth analysis on the branch’s book of business and make recommendations on how to improve! Act as first line of defense to proactively handle the portfolio; evaluate, identify and deliver required training for our branch to build underwriter capabilities. Be the go-to, technical specialist for the branch leader and provides consultative services!
