Position Title: Reporting Officer
Receiving Agency: UNFPA
P Level: P3/P4
Location: Mogadishu, Somalia (30% travel)
Duration: 6 months
Language: Fluency in English is required. Background Description of Emergency / Justification for RequestSomalia is facing a complex and protracted humanitarian crisis characterized by a combination of factors that include conflict, drought, displacement and food insecurity, and rapidly challenging dynamics that will create additional needs in the face of limited resources. It is estimated that approximately 8.25 million people in Somalia are in dire need of humanitarian assistance. This dire situation is further exacerbated by the disproportionate growth of humanitarian requirements, particularly affecting marginalized and vulnerable groups, with women and girls being particularly vulnerable. Several key factors contribute to the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Somalia, including the impact of El Nino, ongoing conflicts such as the political tensions in Puntland and the crisis in Lasannod, relentless attacks by Al-Shabaab, and the government's counter-offensive operations, notably the Black Lion Operations. These elements continue to exacerbate the already deteriorating humanitarian situation in the country.
UNFPA`s work in Somalia focuses on various aspects of Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH), Gender Based Violence (GBV), Youth and Adolecent and Population and Development. Following the scale up of the humanitarian activities in Somalia due to the threat of drought in 2021, UNFPA established a Humanitarian Coordination Unit within its office in Mogadishu. The unit supports the field offices spread across various locations, including Dollow, Baido, Kismayo, Hargeisa, Garowe, and an additional 10 locations managed in collaboration with implementing partners to effectively address issues related to GBV and SRH within the context of humanitarian emergencies.
With the growing humanitarian needs in Somalia, UNFPA requires strong analytical and evidence based reporting to highlight the critical needs of women and girls both to internal and external audience, strengthen advocacy for resource mobilization and demonstrate results and achievements in meeting the needs. UNFPA will strengthen its reporting strategy in 2014 and beyond through the deployment of a reporting officer to its office in Mogadishu. This role will be instrumental in timely gathering, reporting, analysis and dissemination of information, thus strengthening UNFPA's overall humanitarian response in the country.
