- Perform fire safety and hazard assessments, as assigned, on all healthcare facilities, ensuring compliance with NYS Building and Fire Codes, NFPA Standards and Codes, and OSHA standards. Assist in the implementation of The Joint Commission's Standards Manual assessment of all facilities to the Life Safety Code 101 by surveying, identifying and following up on deficiencies.
- Conduct quarterly fire drills on Hospital, Ambulatory Surgery, ACP, and annually on all off-site clinics evaluating effectiveness of the program. Assist with the development of building emergency plans, evacuation plans and fire department pre planning activities.
- Perform periodic inspection and testing of Hospital, Ambulatory Surgery, and ACP fire protection systems, in accordance with NFPA Standards, to include fire extinguisher inspections. Maintain records in a master database. Assess requests for fire protection impairment operations. Monitor and track conditions to ensure restoration.
- Review drawings for conformity with the NYS Building Code, NFPA's Life Safety Code, and all referenced fire protection codes and standards as well as The Joint Commission standards. Document review and maintain records. Conduct enforcement of construction sites for conformity with all fire safety regulations as well. Have shutdown authority for immediate fire and life safety violations in consultation with the Director of Healthcare Safety in absence of Fire Safety Manager. Act as Authority Having Jurisdiction in the witnessing and acceptance of new fire protection systems.
- Design and perform the various elements of the fire safety education and training program for the University Hospital and its satellite facilities, both on and off campus. Deliver various forms of targeted audience training, such as fire warden training, staff RACE training, surgical fire safety training, and fire extinguisher training, modifying programs as needed to tailor to various functional area needs. Participate in safety awareness campaign fairs.
- Perform emergency response to fires, fire alarms, hazardous materials incidents, confined space rescue and technical rescue incidents and other hospital/campus emergencies. Initiate evacuations, search and rescue operations, extinguish incipient fires, and coordinate the response of local fire departments. Respond to, investigate and take appropriate action for fire alarm and fire protection system activations. Complete incident reports.
- Attend required training as necessary to maintain certifications and proficiency in assigned tasks. Provide fire safety coverage for impairments and special events. Accomplish miscellaneous fire safety duties such as issuing hot work and confined space entry permits.
- Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). In lieu of a degree, four (4) years of directly related full-time experience, or a combination of higher education and experience totaling four (4) years of experience may be considered. Three (3) years of experience in a career fire department or five (5) years experience in a volunteer fire department as a current active member in good standing or an equivalent of both. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver’s License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. In addition, the following valid and current certifications are required*: New York State recognized Hazardous Materials Operations Certificate. New York State recognized CPR(D) Certification. Certification as a NYS Code Enforcement Official. Possess NYS Firefighter 1 Certification (or equivalent).

Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Fire Science. Healthcare facility fire and life safety experience. Experience providing fire safety training.
In addition, the following valid and current certifications are preferred*: NYS recognized Hazardous Materials Technician. Rescue Technician Basic. International Codes Council Fire Extinguisher Technician.

Brief Description of Duties:
Provide comprehensive fire and emergency service response, code enforcement, fire inspections, fire protection system testing, and fire safety education to the University Hospital/Pavilion/MART, Ambulatory Care Pavilion (ACP), Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) and ancillary services to all associated Article 28 facilities. The Fire Marshals provide emergency response to fires, fire alarms, hazardous materials spills, confined space and technical rescues, and other emergency conditions. They perform fire and life safety inspections of buildings, inspect fire extinguishers, test fire protection systems, conduct training for staff and perform fire protection plans reviews on all new construction to ensure compliance with the NYS Building Code and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) suite of codes and standards.

This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Non Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.
In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,026 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
Essential Position: This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.
Evening and weekend work will be required at times.
