      Position Summary:
      The Library Media Specialist will work closely with the Upper School faculty, students, and administration to ensure that our library supports the aims of our academic program, with a specific focus on research, future-ready skills and projects, and problem-based instruction. The library media specialist is an essential part of the team that will work with, support, and advise faculty in the development of research-based projects and related skills – including media and information literacy.

      More specifically, the library media specialist will ensure that students leave Upper School with an understanding of the value, and ability to effectively use, research techniques, online databases and resources, and emerging technologies. This would include promoting the use of technology to support learning and teaching. In addition to an essential role in curriculum planning and instruction, the library media specialist will help coordinate online learning in the Upper School and work on broader library, information, and technology initiatives, including advisory lessons and related learning activities, which are expressly focused on developing essential research skills and information literacy.

      Duties and Responsibilities:

      • Maintain an awareness of the Upper School curriculum in order to engage in collaborative planning with department chairs and teachers to develop lessons that can be supported by research
      • Refine and implement a research skills curriculum that will be carried out through project- or problem-based instruction

      • Develop and maintain a deep understanding of multimedia programs to assist students in their development of projects (video, graphics, etc.)

      • Coordinate online learning for Upper School students

      • Develop the print and electronic reference collection

      • Coordinate the use of the online databases through instruction for students and professional development for faculty and staff

      • Develop and deliver comprehensive training sessions on research methodologies, relevant citation style, and plagiarism awareness

      • Work with the library automation system, in terms of cataloging, circulation, maintaining the patron database, inventory, reports, etc.

      • Establish a schedule to ensure that the library is well utilized, including ensuring that the library is functioning between the hours of 7:45 and 4:00

      • Maintain a welcoming and supportive environment in the library, including with dynamic displays of student and faculty work

      • Work with US administration to build out and implement advisory programming and related learning opportunities, with a view toward developing research skills and media literacy

      • Teach up to 2 sections in the Upper School

      • Other duties as assigned

      Qualifications


      • Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science preferred

      • Knowledge of collection development for grades 9-12

      • Advanced skill in use of technology as a tool for teaching and learning

      • Knowledge of a variety of effective instructional techniques that rely on research

      • Outstanding teaching skills, with a minimum of 3 years teaching experience preferred, ideally in grades 9-12

      • Experience advising and coaching students and faculty

      • Knowledge of and experience with curriculum design

      • Experience with online learning, including managing online learning platforms and student research projects, strongly preferred

      • Experience with mastery-based and personalized learning strongly preferred

      • Clear written and oral communication skills

      • Excellent organizational skills

      • Ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and promote a positive work environment

      • Commitment to a growth mindset and continuous development

      Physical Demands: Must be able to sit, stand, walk, bend, lift, and for the majority of the work day. May be required to lift up to 25 pounds.
