- Serves as SDOT's principal urban design expert to the department, Mayor, and City Council.
- Maintains responsibility for assignments that are complex and highly sensitive in nature, where substantial judgment and initiative are essential to make recommendations and resolve problems.
- Develops policies and plans for mobility, access, and public realm uses within city street rights-of-way.
- Leads urban design studies and develops innovative conceptual design plans.
- Exercises strong project and program (e.g., Complete Streets, Public Life) management skills, establishes performance measures, and conducts ongoing evaluations of their effectiveness.
- Establishes street design guidelines and standards (Streets Illustrated) and ensures projects planned and designed are consistent with Seattle’s Complete Streets policies and practices.
- Authoritatively negotiates public and private development project contributions.
- Serves as a core member of the division’s management team.
- Leads and develops a team of professional staff.
- Creates and manages section work plan and budget; establishes program objectives; assesses performance; assigns resources; and directs consultants.
- Supports department goals in promoting diversity and social justice.
- Bachelor's degree in urban planning or design, transportation planning, architecture, landscape architecture, or related field.
- Five (5) years of project management experience for large, complex urban design and/or transportation projects.
- Three (3) years of direct supervisory experience, including staff development and conducting performance evaluations.
- Ability to effectively work in a multi-cultural workplace with a diverse customer base.
- Ability to collaborate with others and to effectively manage and prioritize a large portfolio.
- Experience working with elected officials, leading matrixed and multi-disciplinary teams, conducting community engagement activities, and developing staff.
- Ability to communicate complex issues with a broad range of audiences.
- A demonstrated commitment to equity, safety, and sustainability.
- Work is typically performed in a hybrid work environment in which a minimum of 2 days of the work is completed in a City office, and 3 days of the work is completed remotely in a regular 40-hour work week.

SDOT has an exciting opportunity for a people-oriented and innovative Urban Design Manager (Manager 3) in our Policy & Planning Division. This key leader will serve as SDOT's principal urban designer and program manager and will advise the Department Director, Mayor, and City Council on policy recommendations and design solutions to challenging situations. This person will lead a team of urban designers to develop and deliver projects and programs; identify and assess design solutions that address the needs of all users within street rights of way; create streetscape concept plans consistent with community vision; conduct urban design reviews for public and private developments; negotiate with project proponents to leverage plan implementation; develop design guidance and standards; and initiate actions to advance the City's goal of creating an inviting and inclusive public realm. The City’s full salary range for this position is $52.36 - $78.53 hourly.
