      The City of Redmond provides our community of over 72,000 people with reliable and safe drinking water, as well as wastewater and stormwater services that help sustain people's quality of life and protect and enhance Redmond’s natural environment. And we have an exciting, new opportunity for someone like you to join our team as our new Utility Locator .

      As a Utility Locator in our Public Works department, you will play a vital role in accurately locating and marking water mains, wastewater mains, stormwater mains, and related infrastructure to prevent damage during construction or excavation projects. Utility locators use specialized equipment and techniques to locate and trace the paths of city underground utilities, providing essential information to contractors, builders, and excavators.

The Utility Locator role involves repetitive tasks such as locating and marking utility infrastructure accurately. Utility locators analyze utility maps, as-built drawings, and other records to understand the layout and configuration of underground utility systems. This information helps them determine the approximate locations of utility lines before conducting physical locates. The ideal candidate should have a deep understanding of the importance of precision and attention to detail in locating and marking utility infrastructure. Your ability to ensure accurate results will contribute to the overall efficiency and safety of our systems.
      • Comfortable meeting and communicating with contractors and builders: Utility locators work closely with contractors, builders, and excavation teams to coordinate and communicate about the location of underground utilities. They provide guidance and support to ensure that construction activities do not disrupt or damage utility infrastructure. In the field, you will encounter contractors and builders with varying personalities and levels of friendliness. We are looking for someone who can handle these interactions with professionalism, confidence, and diplomacy. Effective communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships are essential.
      This position offers a great opportunity for individuals who are ready to transition from physically demanding public works maintenance labor into a new career. While the Utilities Locator role still requires fieldwork, it allows for a shift toward a more specialized and intellectually engaging role within the utilities sector.

      This role is also ideal for those with utility or private utility locator experience. So, if you have prior experience in utilities or have worked at private utility locator companies, this role will provide a valuable platform for your expertise. Your understanding of underground construction and coordination of various utilities will be an asset to our team.

      However, no utility's location experience is required. Therefore, we will welcome candidates who possess an understanding of underground construction and the coordination of utilities below grade to apply.

      Overall, the role of a Utility Locator is crucial in preventing damage to underground utility systems and promoting the safety of construction projects. Their accurate locating and marking of utilities help protect infrastructure, minimize service disruptions, and enhance public safety.
      If you are selected to join us, here are a few of the responsibilities you will have:

      • Accurately locate and mark water mains, valves, services, wastewater mains, side sewers, stormwater mains, catch basins, and related infrastructure.
      • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other utility locators, engineers, planners, inspectors, and contractors.
      • Utilize "ISite" cloud-based Locator Ticket Management software to receive, track, and manage locate requests.
      • Respond promptly to emergency locates and customer requests.
      • Perform GIS error requests to update inaccurate GIS utility maps.
      • Self-manage daily locate workload, organize, prioritize, and demonstrate the ability to work independently and collaboratively with other locators in the division.

      To perform these duties, you will have:

      • An understanding of underground construction and coordination of various utilities beneath the surface.
      • Strong problem-solving skills and meticulous attention to detail.
      • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, even in challenging situations.
      • Comfortable collaborating with colleagues to strategize workload distribution and achieve shared goals.
      • Ability to adapt and thrive in a repetitive work environment.
      • Previous experience in utilities or private utility locator companies is desirable but not required.
      • Physical fitness and ability to work in various weather conditions and physically demanding environments.

      Education and Experience

      • Any combination equivalent to high school diploma or equivalency and one (1) year construction or trades experience.
      Licenses and Certificates
      • Valid Washington State Driver's License and a driving record that meets City standards.
