      Job Summary:

      Under limited supervision, provide veterinary technician expertise to the living collection of animals, support MBA live animal research activities, and to undertake related husbandry program support activities. Perform other duties as required.

      Core Activities:

      • Process diagnostic tests for shipment to outside reference labs.
      • Maintain, clean, and disinfect veterinary lab facilities and equipment.
      • Perform appropriate quality assurance and control evaluations and correct anomalies as needed (e.g., calibrate equipment, utilize industrial standard solutions to validate test results, etc.)
      • Maintain/manage veterinary pharmacy.
      • Dispense prescribed drugs and treatments to animal caretakers.
      • Participate in planning for short- and long-term departmental goals.
      • Perform veterinary technician tasks as defined by the California Veterinary Medicine Practice Act and associated laws and regulations.
      • Administration of veterinarian-prescribed drugs and treatments (e.g., injections, stomach tubes, nebulizations, etc.)
      • Induce, monitor, and manage animal anesthetic procedures as directed by attending veterinarian.
      • Collect biological specimens from aquarium animals as directed by attending veterinarian.
      • Perform dental prophylaxis and extractions
      • Perform diagnostic radiography on aquarium animals in accordance with California laws and regulations

      Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

      • Minimum two years’ work experience with marine mammals or large exotic animals in a rehabilitation or zoological setting
      • Minimum four years’ work experience as a licensed veterinary technician
      • Familiarity with data collection and data entry techniques
      • Knowledge of laboratory sciences including Immunology (cellular and humoral), serum/plasma chemistry, fluid analysis including urinalysis, hematology, parasitology, microbiology
      • Experience with Lab information systems, quality control and assurance, animal related diagnostic laboratory methodology
      • Knowledge of personal computers and computer software applications, including Microsoft Office (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Access)
      • Solid problem solving skills
      • Ability to encourage and support a team-based work environment

      Physical Requirements to Perform Essential Job Functions:

      • Typical office equipment, dive and life support equipment, boats, trailers, hand trucks
      • Constant sitting, standing, walking, bending
      • Occasional unassisted lifting up to 50 lbs
      • Primary work within the aquarium's animal care center with limited duties in the clinical pathology lab, necropsy lab, animal exhibit/service areas, and off site field sites

      Hourly Compensation Range:

      $28.27-$34.62 USD per hour. Starting rate will vary based on previous experience and relevant skills/knowledge set.
