      POSITION SUMMARY

      Performs duties unique to the position of Veterinary Technician. Assists the Veterinarian(s) and Hospital Manager in all aspects of veterinary duties related to animal health and wellness. Must be available for 16 - 24 hours per week .

      REPORTING RELATIONSHIP

      Reports directly to the Hospital Manager

      SCHEDULE

      The person filling this position will work a 2-to-3-day schedule that may be altered depending on the week or season. He or she may be required to work at least one weekend day and may be asked to work some holidays. The ideal candidate will also have some work-week flexibility and may be asked to cover extra veterinary technician shifts when needed.

      ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

      1. Assists in all aspects of the health care and wellness of Utah’s Hogle Zoo resident animals as part of the Veterinary Hospital staff.
      2. Can properly set up and participate in all medical and surgical procedures. Is able to clean, pack, and sterilize surgical instruments.
      3. Possesses technical skills including but not limited to anesthesia induction and monitoring, IV catheter placement and maintenance, blood collection, other sample collection, and fluid pump operation.
      4. Provides appropriate care for hospitalized animals or those in holding.
      5. Assist in sets up of quarantine spaces for incoming animals. Provides husbandry care for new animals arriving at the Zoo’s collection and includes cleaning and disinfecting.
      6. Is/becomes familiar with the natural history and husbandry requirements of the resident animals and applies that information to their care.
      7. Can comfortably and safely restrain a variety of animal species including reptiles.
      8. Will fill and dispense prescriptions including controlled substances.
      9. Become(s) proficient in all in-house laboratory procedures including hematology (automated and manual), chemistry analyzer, EPOC analyzer, urinalysis, fecal analysis, and cytology.
      10. Prepares samples for shipment to outside laboratories and transports samples when necessary.
      11. Assists in performing and annotating postmortem procedures (necropsies).
      12. Achieves a working knowledge of the operation of all Hospital equipment including anesthesia machines, portable and stationary x-ray, VetRocket system, laser, ultrasound, endoscopy, BAIR hugger, and thermography.
      13. Becomes familiar with the remote drug delivery system (darting equipment) and can use it effectively.
      14. Communicates in a positive, clear, concise, and professional manner especially regarding medical cases.
      15. Is proficient in data entry. Will be taught the ZIMS medical record system.
      16. Responsible for filing medical paperwork.
      17. May be required to work alone due to vacations, sick-time or other.
      18. Required to euthanize some pest species when trapped on zoo grounds.
      19. Performs other duties as assigned.

      DESIRED EXPERIENCE

      Education

      • Minimum of 18 years of age and possess a high school diploma or GED.
      • Background in veterinary technology preferred.
      • Does not need to be a Licensed or Certified veterinary technician.

      Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

      • Basic computer operations.
      • Microsoft Office Suite.
      • Mathematical concepts and logic.
      • Basic mathematical formulas and calculations.

      Work Environment

      This position requires working in an outdoor environment, exposure to the seasonal elements, dust, and allergens for prolonged periods of time. Tasks require a variety of physical activities, which generally involve muscular strain. Eye, hand, finger dexterity required to perform essential functions. Must be able to listen and respond to a portable radio. Ability to stoop, bend, twist, turn, climb, jump, run when necessary, and move quickly to avoid dangerous situations. Must be able to walk on wet and uneven surfaces. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. unassisted and 75 lbs. with assistance. Must be able to push and pull up to 53 lbs.

      The person filling this position must provide a negative TB test prior to hire date and will be subject to TB screening through the course of employment.
