POSITION SUMMARY
The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) is a program of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by American Councils for International Education and other partner organizations to improve the ability of Americans to engage with other people through shared language, to develop a cadre of Americans with advanced linguistic skills and related cultural understand to advance international dialogue and compete effectively in the global economy, and to spark a lifetime of interest in foreign languages and cultures among American youth.
Virtual NSLI-Y is intended to increase the reach and scope of the NSLI-Y program. Based in any U.S.-based location, the Virtual NSLI-Y Teachers will conduct virtual language instruction and cultural programming for novice high school students over a 10-week program.
The selected candidate will be hired to remotely teach beginner-level Chinese (Mandarin) for a short-term appointment of no more than 97 hours in Winter 2024 term (January – March). All lessons will be conducted virtually via Canvas and Zoom. The teacher must have a quiet space to conduct class, computer, webcam, headset, and reliable internet connection.
The Virtual Language Teacher position is an exciting teaching opportunity for a foreign language teacher who wishes to expand their proficiency in/mastery of online education and introduce U.S. high school students to Chinese culture.POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
• Participate in mandatory Virtual NSLI-Y Orientation Webinar and possible virtual teaching/facilitation training
• Develop 10-week beginner-level language & culture program for students to reach Novice-Low language level (ACTFL) in Mandarin Chinese, and develop increased long-term interest and engagement with foreign languages and cultures (using 5 Cs of ACTFL World Readiness Standards: Communities, Communication, Cultures, Comparisons, and Connections, Asia Society’s Four Domains of Global Competence, and possible resources/activities list provided by Virtual NSLI-Y staff)
• Implement virtual lessons for 90-minute classes of up to 10 high school students via Zoom 2-3 times/week (See Schedule Options on our webpage)
• Plan thoroughly for each class meeting by preparing engaging language lesson plans, and identifying guest speakers who can present to students about cultural aspects of life in predominantly Chinese-speaking countries
• Conduct classes in Mandarin Chinese at least 80% of the time
• Incorporate activities, scenarios, videos, guest speakers, projects, and more as would be done in a “traditional” classroom in consultation with provided Virtual NSLI-Y resources/activities list
• Assign short homework/practice at the end of each class meeting
• Participate in monthly check-ins with Virtual NSLI-Y staff and incorporate feedback into practice
• Conduct post-program assessment as designed by Virtual NSLI-Y staffQualifications

• Bachelor's degree or higher;
• Teaching experience in Mandarin Chinese as a Foreign Language in a primary, secondary school, or higher education environment;
• Five years of classroom teaching experience at the time of application;
• Demonstrated professional experience teaching in virtual environments;
• Demonstrated understanding of pedagogy;
• Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills;
• Experiences with creating and managing online learning environments;
• Professional proficiency in written and spoken English; and
