      POSITION SUMMARY

The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) is a program of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Its goals are to increase the number of young Americans with the language skills necessary to advance international dialogue, promote economic prosperity and innovation worldwide, contribute to national security and global stability by building understanding across cultures, improve Americans’ ability to engage with the people of other countries through shared language, and provide a tangible incentive for the learning and use of foreign language by creating overseas language study opportunities for U.S. high school students.

Virtual NSLI-Y is intended to increase the reach and scope of the NSLI-Y program. Based in any location, Virtual NSLI-Y teachers conduct virtual language instruction and cultural programming for novice U.S. high school students over a 10-week program.

The selected candidates will be hired to remotely teach beginner-level Russian for a short-term appointment of no more than 97 hours in Fall 2024 term (September – December). All lessons will be conducted virtually via Canvas and Zoom. The teacher must have a quiet space to conduct class, computer, webcam, headset, and reliable internet connection.

The Virtual Language Teacher position is an exciting teaching opportunity for a foreign language teacher who wishes to expand their proficiency in/mastery of online education and introduce U.S. high school students to the cultures of countries where the language is spoken.

      • Implement virtual lessons for 90-minute classes of up to 10 high school students via Zoom 2-3 times/week (See Schedule Options on our webpage)

      • Conduct classes in the target language at least 80% of the time
      • Incorporate activities, scenarios, videos, guest speakers, projects, and more as would be done in a “traditional” classroom in consultation with provided Virtual NSLI-Y resources/activities
