Mō te tūranga | About the role
We are looking for a Vision and Hearing Technician to join our team. In this position you will provide vision and hearing screening for children in Te Whatu Ora, Southern area for early detection and referral of vision and hearing defects as per the Ministry of Health guidelines.
The focus of the VHT service is 4-year-olds within Early Childhood Education centres; screening as part of the Before School Check program and this includes Audiometry, Tympanometry and Distance vision checks. You will also undertake Year 7 Distance Vision check of 11 years of age children. Currently we have technicians located in Invercargill, Queenstown, and Dunedin.
This is a great opportunity for someone wanting an excellent starting point into our diverse health industry. This position provides vocational training immediately and also assists you to obtaining the mandatory NZQA certification as a Vision and Hearing Technician, National Certificate, Community Support Services level 3, which must be completed within 12 months of commencing.

It is imperative that you can establish rapport quickly with children and their parents/whanau both in early childhood and schools settings.
As part of this position, you will be required to have or be able to work towards and successfully complete the New Zealand Certificate Health and Wellbeing level 3 ( Vision and Hearing ). In additional you will be trained to use the screening equipment and ensure that it is maintained annually, and have competent computer skills.
To be considered for this position you should possess the following:
You will be required to work in a variety of educational settings throughout the Southern DHB district so it is essential that you hold a current full NZ driver’s license as there will be travel each day involved with this position.Your hours will be five workdays over the fortnight, Monday to Friday as rostered. The normal hours will be 0800-1630 but due to the nature of this role you will need to have some flexibility to increase the hours worked if required.

Utu whānui |Salary range
This role belongs to the PSA/DHBs Allied, Public Health and Technical Multi-Employer Collective Agreement and falls between Step 3 ($69,975 p.a) and Step 6 ($80,374 p.a pro rata) of the Non-Degree Technical Scale.
