  Visual Journalist

  Reuters Pictures is looking for a dynamic and talented Visual Journalist experienced in photojournalism and with video skills or the desire to learn, to be based in Shanghai, China, one of Asia’s most important countries.

  We are looking for a foreign origin visual journalist with plenty of initiative to cover news and sports, and have good understanding of the region’s politics.

  
  The pictures and video news industry is going through a period of significant change, driven by the rapidly changing habits of news consumers and ever-changing technology. The successful candidate should have a working knowledge of and extensive experience in photography. They should also have at least basic knowledge of video shooting, as well as a desire and capacity to learn more.

  
  We want someone who has excellent communication skills, an unflappable temperament, and a passion for visual journalism. She or He must be able to work closely in a team with visuals colleagues and reporters.

  Fluent English is necessary to allow the successful candidate to work independently.

  A commitment to preserving the Thomson Reuters Trust Principles of independence, integrity and freedom from bias is essential.

  For regulatory reasons, we may only consider candidates who do not hold Chinese passports for this foreign visual journalist role.

  About the Role:

  In this opportunity as a Visual Journalist, part of the Reuters photography team, you will:

  • Ensure Reuters wins the biggest news stories and support the rich photojournalism of the Wider Image in China.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in responding to changing assignments including the ability to work under pressure with patience in complex environments.
  • Participate in assignments with multimedia teams.
  • Pitch and develop story ideas on a wide range of subjects, including climate change.
  • Ensure safety newsgathering protocols are followed and well communicated.
  • Ensure local laws are followed with the ability to respectfully navigate diverse cultural environments.

  About You:

  You’re fit for the role of Visual Journalist, if your background includes:

  • Minimum four years’ experience in visual journalism.
  • Willingness to travel to breaking news stories, often at short notice.
  • Proven storytelling skills, and a desire to work on long-term, in-depth stories.
  • Excellent news judgment and in-depth knowledge of pictures business.
  • Good understanding of the latest digital visual technologies for photographing, filming, editing, and transmitting.
  • The candidate must not hold a Chinese passport due to regulatory reasons.

  Preferred:

  • Experience working in the Greater China region.
  • Ability to speak basic Mandarin.
