      Job Description

      The Opportunity

      We are seeking a visionary and dynamic Vice President of Enterprise Risk Management who will design and implement enterprise-wide frameworks and key risk policies impacting Manulife’s global operations. You will also lead and oversee the seamless delivery of critical risk processes, including a regular cycle of board risk committee reporting as well as ad hoc risk related requests for analysis from senior management, board and regulatory bodies. As a pivotal member of our Risk leadership team, you will play a critical role in shaping and executing our risk management strategies to ensure the sustained growth and success of our organization. This role will directly report to the Global CRO of the organization.

This role requires a highly visible leader who can collaborate across the company, leveraging relationships and expertise to build trust, credibility, and successful partnerships within the Senior Leadership Team of peers.

      The key responsibilities you would face in the role include:

      • As a strategic leader, you will be responsible for developing a comprehensive understanding of our organization's goals, business dynamics, and industry trends and their implications for our risk portfolio. Your ability to analyze these factors and translate them into actionable risk management strategies, risk appetite statements and score cards for business leaders will be instrumental in driving our initiatives forward and contribute to sustained growth and success of our business.
      • You will champion a disciplined approach to risk identification, assessment, monitoring and reporting. Your meticulous approach to risk assessment and mitigation will ensure that our risk management strategies are well-founded and comprehensive.
      • You will collaborate with senior level executives (GLT/ELT/Board) to provide strategic insights and recommendations on risk management matters. Your influence and credibility will be key in fostering a risk-aware culture throughout the organization. Your ability to coordinate and manage various aspects of our risk strategies will ensure seamless execution and alignment with our organizational goals.
      • Your Strategic mindset should help identify emerging risks and opportunities, and formulate innovative risk strategies that align with our long term objectives, that will be crucial in steering the organization toward sustainable growth. Your proficiency in designing adaptable risk frameworks will enable the organization to respond effectively to changing risk landscapes. You will drive the evolution of our risk management methodologies to stay ahead of emerging threats.
      • Effectively conveying complex risk-related aspects to both functional and non-functional stakeholders is paramount. Your clear and concise communication style will facilitate informed decision-making at all levels of the organization, promoting risk awareness and appropriate mitigation. Through effective communication ensure the company’s enterprise-wide approach to managing risks well understood across the organization.
      • You will be required to Interact with external stakeholders, regulators (notably OSFI), rating agencies and industry peers to discuss risk-related matters. Your ability to navigate these relationships will enhance our standing within the risk management ecosystem.

      • Collaboration will be at the heart of your success. You will collaborate closely with the broader risk teams, fostering an environment of unity and shared purpose. Your leadership will drive effective communication and cooperation among team members to achieve collective risk management objectives.
      • As an inspirational leader, you will ensure the proper development of talent on your team as well as provide feedback and guidance to talent across the Risk Management organization.
      • Support the Chief Risk Officer in leading the internal and external discussions on risk frameworks and risk strategies.

      First year success Factors

      Within the first year, a successful candidate can expect to have achieved:

      • The implementation of new measures to clarify our risk tolerance and posture.
      • Enhanced visibility to the team and the work being completed.
      • Introduce new reporting to our Board and risk committees.

      Qualifications

      Candidates are expected to minimally reflect the following in their professional qualifications:

      • Strategic thinker, with a proven ability to design conceptual frameworks for assessing issues and to operationalize these frameworks.
      • Strong technical and analytical skills, including a proven aptitude to grasp quickly risk issues arising in the context of Manulife business and to secure comfort tackling all facets of enterprise risk management that arise at a global insurance company.
      • Excellent communicator, with superb skills of interacting with stakeholders, including most senior levels of the organization and critical external relationships (regulators and rating agencies), to engage in complex dialogues on conceptual and pragmatic matters related to risk assessments and mitigations.
      • Excellent listener and also strong to advance own views in order to arrive at optimal resolutions.
      • Proven strong capabilities to managed most senior (including board-level) processes, striking the right balance between the attention to detail and strategic insights.
      • Strong leader with a proven record of excellence working across a large organization, excelling in “impact and influence” competencies.
      • A minimum of 10 years of experience in risk management or related areas, including actuarial, finance, compliance, strategy and similar, preferably at a global life insurance company, or at another publicly traded diversified financial services company. He/she could also come from a consulting background if the requisite experience is evident.

      Salary & Benefits

      The annual base salary for this role is listed below.

      Primary Location

      Toronto, Ontario

      Salary range is expected to be between

      $171,200.00 CAD - $317,700.00 CAD
