      VP – MAINTENANCE of the Reading, PA operations

      The VP, Maintenance will . . . provide leadership, development, tactical and strategic planning for maintenance organization enforcing Carpenter Critical 7 approach to environmental, health and safety. Utilizing the Carpenter Operations Model and through maintenance activities support Carpenter’s brand, growth, profitability, and achievement of annual operating plans. They will be responsible for ensuring the successful implementation and completion of the maintenance business plan, as well as overall function of the maintenance departments. The VP of Maintenance will develop division level directors and managers by setting clearly defined plans and goals for each Maintenance area and measuring results against those goals and plans. This position will identify and analyze equipment reliability and performance trends and directly help resolve issues. The VP of Maintenance will collaborate with Global Engineering, Procurement, Carpenter Continuous Improvement team, and Operating VP’s to identify new areas of technology to maximize efficiency. The VP of Maintenance reports directly to the VP Manufacturing Reading.

      Key Responsibilities:

      • Within area of responsibility, lead, implement and execute the Safety program to ensure a safe work environment within the Reading operations. Within area of responsibility, lead, implement and execute the environmental program to ensure a compliant work environment within the Reading facility.
      • Responsible for execution and documentation of work required by the quality system to ensure compliance with the appropriate standards in the Reading operations.
      • Oversee all aspects of maintenance operations with direct reports. Communicate and portray the Company's vision, mission, and values. Establish maintenance processes and procedures, internal and external, and monitor their effectiveness by providing timely, accurate and complete reports on the condition of and the impact to the Carpenter Reading. Provide support and assistance as needed for trouble shooting and correcting equipment and process issues. Responsible for all maintenance equipment, tools, and facilities and their compliance with all applicable regulations, company policies, and industry best practices. Build an organizational culture in which passion for continuous improvement is innate. Reviews and approves weekly shift schedules for hourly technicians based on business needs of the plant. Accountable for developing, coordinating, and the planning of maintenance activities through direct reports including.
      • Examine and evaluate current state of equipment to develop action plans and strategies to maximize reliability and efficiencies. Develop, track, manage, establish team goals and objectives; develop metrics and scorecards to monitor progress and achievement. Utilize KPI process, and Carpenter Operating Model to drive improvements and accountability.
      • Lead and provide guidance and direction to subordinate Managers. Accountable for subordinate’s performance. Conduct performance reviews and develop career goals for all direct reports.
      • Build and maintain a collaborative and engaged environment by providing positive, encouraging, and informative communications, input and feedback. Motivate and manage the maintenance team; attract, recruit, and retain required members; provide mentoring as a cornerstone for the development of others. Build individual and team competencies with ongoing positive and constructive feedback, as well as thorough and timely performance evaluations. Use appropriate methods to help build a cohesive team; facilitating the completion of team goals. Establish policies and procedures which are consistent with the company's vision and strategies and which direct the implementation and execution of such throughout the company.
      • Develop and analyze Maintenance budgets. Provide and promote effective communications with internal and external customers Effectively translate ideas into actions and advance them within the company. Effectively prepare for the future while maintaining current success and momentum.
      • Assist the VP of Manufacturing in other areas and with projects for the good of the company. shift inspections, checks, routines.
      • Daily effective utilization of human capital for planned work, unplanned repairs, and preventative,
      • predicative, and improvement activities. Weekly repair-turn planning. Planned maintenance outages. Accountable for achieving established goals and objectives for department. Goals and objectives will collaboratively be developed with VP Manufacturing and shall include. Managing of spending, Critical spares inventory, Tools, parts, services, and consumables to achieve dollar per ton produced in area objective.
      • Achievement of unplanned down time goals and the effective utilization of area of responsibility assets (%utilization, %OEE)
      • Managing and achievement of overtime goals
      • Utilizing Reliability Centered Maintenance approach, implement effective processes and metrics for total equipment reliability. Metric will be Asset replacement value % Accountable for ensuring the utilization of improvement tools.
      • CMMS – SAP. Ultrasonic Leak Detection, Thermography, Tribology. RCFA / FRACAS (Root Cause Failure Analysis / Failure Reporting, Analysis, and Corrective Action System)
      • Responsible for the integrity of Equipment Historical information by ensuring all repairs are documented in the plant CMMS – SAP System with written work orders. 100% of hourly time will be tracked to a CMMS work order. Expected to produce a weekly report at the end of each week, reflecting on the results, issues and opportunities. The report format and structure will be a jointly created and agreed upon and shall include:
      • Safety, environmental issues, and adherence to compliance, results from operations, results and variations from goals and objectives, downtime issues, root cause and corrective actions taken.
      • Impacts on customer quality and or satisfaction which were the result of issues in the area of responsibility. Cost performance to budget. Improvement, project activities
      • Perform all other duties and projects as assigned.

      REQUIREMENTS FOR THE VP MAINTENANCE

      • Bachelor’s degree in engineering required.
      • 10 – 15 years of progressive maintenance and managerial experience. Relevant industry / steel making experience preferred.
      • Experience as a Plant Leader and Project or Program Manager.
      • Demonstrated leadership abilities with a commitment to company values and ethics.
      • Proven streamlining, value creation, process improvement – process optimization and team building skills.
      • Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously and a proven history in developing and implementing strategies to resolve recurrent performance issues and conflicts.
      • Demonstrated people skills. Ability to develop and track performance through metrics, control charts and statistical analysis.
      • Level headed in a fast paced, ever changing environment.
      • Requires excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills. Proficient in MS Office including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. SAP experience a plus.
      • Familiar with industry concepts and best practices.
