Job Description

- Plans and directs overall operations, programs and activities of facility.
- Directs pivotal employees in assigned areas to ensure efficient operation of institution.
- Applies preventive security measures enforcing policy and procedures avoiding potentially threatening issues.
- Monitors for effective operation of facility.
- Coordinates and evaluates programs, security, custodial measures.
- Pursues ongoing compliance with existing administrative directives and department rules.
- Reviews and implements fiscal responsibility of expenditures and resources.
- Establishes standards for safekeeping and guarantee of offender trust funds and other funds within the facility.
- Represents DOC in communicating with the media.
- Complies with laws cited by the State of Illinois in operation of facility
- Certifies legal decrees are implemented per court order.
- Assigns and reviews work.
- Provides guidance and training to assigned staff.
- Counsels staff regarding work performance.
- Reassigns staff to meet day-to-day operating needs.
- Establishes annual goals and objectives.
- Approves time off.
- Adjusts first level grievances.
- Effectively recommends and imposes discipline, up to and including discharge.
- Prepares and signs performance evaluations.
- Determines and recommends staffing needs.
- Reviews activity reports.
- Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college, preferably with courses in law enforcement, criminology, penology or a related field.
- Requires four (4) years of progressively responsible administrative experience in a law enforcement public or private organization, a correctional facility or related field.
- Requires ability to travel.
- Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
- Requires ability to pass a drug screen. On January 1, 2020, the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act made it legal for residents over the age of 21 to produce, consume and sell cannabis in Illinois. Please note that although the law has changed, the Department will continue to enforce the Department’s zero-tolerance Drug Testing policy. The use of unauthorized drugs, including cannabis, by an employee, regardless of the position held is prohibited.

Facility Statement:
The mission of Vandalia Correctional Center includes maintaining a safe adn secure environment for all staff and individuals in custody as well as porviding progrmas as designed to assist individuals in custody in their re-entry into society. To attain maximum success of these programs, security and accountablity of individuals in custody remains the centers' main goal.
The Vandalia Correctional Center is located 85 miles southeast of Springfield, was established as the original prison farm operation in Illinois houseing entirely misdemenor individuals in custody. The center has dorm type setting with 113 buildings, totaling 412,000 square feet. Total acreage is 1,520 with eight acres contained within the perimeter fence.

This position is to serve as the Warden (Senior Public Service Administrator Option 7) for the IL Department of Corrections at Vandalia Correctional Center.
Job Responsibilities
1. Formulates and implements rules, regulations, directives, policies and procedures governing,
employee and individuals in custody.2. Directs and evaluates program responsibility.
3. Plans and directs facility budget.
4. Consults with court officials, law enforcement personnel and other agencies regarding care and custody of offenders.
5. Serves as full line supervisor.
7. Speaks before Civic groups arid organizations to discuss programs other facility and Department of Corrections.
8. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the
duties enumerated above.
