As a Wastewater Maintenance Worker, you’ll perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks to maintain and repair public works assets including sewer main lines and lower laterals, contributing directly to the safety and functionality of essential infrastructure in the Wastewater Division.

      Examples of Typical Job Functions:

      • Operate and maintain a wide range of vehicles and equipment, such as dump trucks, backhoes, vacuum trucks, and sewer inspection tools
      • Assist in cleaning and maintaining sewer mains, storm drains, and lift stations using specialized equipment
      • Safely work in confined spaces following Cal-OSHA and City safety standards
      • Use video inspection equipment to assess sewer lines and respond to sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs)
      • Locate and mark underground wastewater utilities
      • Perform unskilled to skilled manual labor in maintaining and repairing streets, sidewalks, sewer systems, traffic signs, parks, and more
      • Respond to emergency calls, including placing barricades, debris removal, street sign replacement, and urgent repairs
      • Work collaboratively with team members and provide excellent customer service to the public

      Education:

      • High School Diploma or G.E.D. (required).


      Licenses/Certifications:

      • Possess and maintain a valid Class A California Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements and a satisfactory driving record OR must have ability to obtain within one year from date of appointment (required for full-time appointments).
      • California Water Environment Association (CWEA) Collection Systems Operator Certification Grade I or 2 (highly desirable).


      Experience:

      • Two years of relevant maintenance experience.


      Knowledge of:

      • Tools and equipment commonly used in construction and maintenance work
      • Maintenance methods, techniques, and practices
      • Operation and upkeep of equipment used in grounds and sewer system maintenance
      • Standard safety procedures and precautions
      • Traffic laws and regulations pertaining to trucks and heavy equipment
      • Procedures and equipment for sewer system maintenance and repair
      • Relevant laws, ordinances, rules, regulations, and policies


      Ability to:

      • Operate a wide range of vehicles and heavy equipment
      • Safely use hand and power tools in maintenance and construction tasks
      • Maintain accurate records of work completed and materials used
      • Perform physically demanding labor and heavy manual tasks regularly
      • Safely operate machinery and make repairs and adjustments as needed
      • Learn, apply, and follow policies, procedures, and regulations
      • Pour and mix concrete for various projects
      • Repair and maintain irrigation and sprinkler systems
      • Read gauges and testing equipment to ensure proper operation

      This position is subject to mandatory drug and alcohol testing pursuant to Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).


      Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

      • Ability to consistently and frequently operate tools and equipment; lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds; handle regular fieldwork
      • Outdoor work with exposure to loud noise, extreme temperatures, inclement weather, mechanical and electrical hazards, and hazardous substances
      • Monday to Sunday availability, with hours and days adjusted as needed
