      GENERAL PURPOSE
      Under general supervision and direction of the Chief Operator and Water/Wastewater Facilities Manager, the Water/Wastewater Operator executes various tasks for the efficient operation and maintenance of the Water and Wastewater Treatment Facilities, and performs related work as required. This position qualifies as emergency personnel as permitted by Wis. Stat. Sec. 66.0502.
      SHIFT/HOURS
      7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (generally) with 10 minute break and 20 minute paid lunch; 40 hours per week (generally); additional time as the job dictates. Will be primary on-call on a rotation; may be called in for emergencies outside of rotation.

      Training period will be Monday-Friday until the end of 2025. Subject to operational needs, after the first of the year, the operator works a 5-week rotation. Rotation consists of one work weekend and a week/weekend on call, a four-day weekend off, and two regular weekends with Saturday and Sunday off.

      ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
      ·
      • Operates, inspects and performs routine maintenance on pumps and equipment.
      • Packs and greases pumps and lubricates equipment.
      • Cleans tanks, digesters, and final clarifiers.
      • Pumps and thickens sludge and makes operational changes relative to its performance.
      • Repairs minor breakdowns, makes minor adjustments to operating equipment and determines efficient operation by observing operation and interpreting results.
      • Ensures that valves open and close properly.
      • Reads and records information and statistical data secured from temperature, fuel, water, weather, and other gauges.
      • Performs laboratory tests using various equipment such as spectrophotometer, titrator, and turbidimeter. Examples of tests include p.H., Total and Free Chlorine, Alkalinity, hardness, fluoride, TSS, MLSS, 30 minute settling and various bacteriological tests.
      • Cleans working area and equipment and maintains grounds.
      • Cuts grass, shovels snow, and paints.
      • Assists in water and sewer distribution maintenance work .
      • May operate equipment such as forklift, lawnmower, air hammer, backhoe/loader, and dump truck.
      • Assists in on-the-job training for co-workers.
      • Repairs chlorinating and metering equipment; changes chlorine cylinders.
      • Performs sonic test and pin membrane modules.
      • checks chlorine and fluoride levels.
      • Assists in unloading and feeding of chemicals. Requires safe handling of dangerous chemicals.
      • Consults with lab tech/operator in determining chemical feeding quantities.
      • Maintains prompt, predictable, and regular physical attendance.
      • Performs other related duties consistent with the function of the classification; other duties as assigned.


      DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
      Education and Experience:
      • High school diploma or GED.
      • Three years of recent increasingly responsible experience in equipment operation and general mechanical work preferred.
      • Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License required.
      • Possession of Grade S-1 Wisconsin DNR Certification as a Water Utility Operator within one year of hire.
      Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
      • General knowledge of water and wastewater treatment facility operations.
      • Knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment related to water and wastewater treatment facilities.
      • Mechanical ability.
      • Ability to read gauges and accurately record data.
      • Working knowledge of laboratory functions.
      • Knowledge of occupational and safety hazards and precautions necessary in the work place.
      • Thoroughness, resourcefulness, and good judgment.
      • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
      • Ability to provide truthful and accurate written and verbal communications.
      TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
      Small equipment and common hand tools, power tools, forklift, snow blower, lawn equipment, vehicles.
