      Special Information:

      The Libby area is a high- cost real estate market and applicants are encouraged to research the housing market before applying. Libby is a small but dynamic community located within a thirty-to-forty-five-minute drive of the Thompson Chain of Lakes, Turner Mountain Ski Resort, several National and State forests and parks, the Cabinet Mountains Wilderness area and the Idaho and Canada borders. There are numerous outdoor related activities available in the immediate area. Libby resides in Lincoln County, population of approximately 21,000 people, and is the largest city in the extreme northwest corner of Montana. Libby has medical facilities, K-12 school system and is within a ninety-minute drive from Kalispell, MT. The office for this position is in the Libby Field Office located at 385 Fish Hatchery Rd, Libby, MT. The field office is a well-maintained building which houses both Fisheries and Wildlife division staff. Other towns within driving range to the office are Eureka, Troy, Trout Creek Yaak, Thompson Falls, Kalispell and Bonners Ferry ID.

      Job Duties:

      The Wildlife Conflict Management Specialist, in conjunction with the Regional Wildlife Manager, will be responsible for developing and implementing a program that focuses on minimizing wildlife/human conflicts, managing, sustainable populations, conserving habitat, and assisting private citizens and industry by providing technical assistance and education in living responsibly with wildlife in NW Montana.

      The Wildlife Conflict Management Specialist works directly with landowners, business owners, other agency staff and the public to reduce and mitigate wildlife/human conflicts, including those involving grizzly bears, black bean mountain lions, wolves, furbearers, and ungulates. The primary focus of this position will be bears and mountain lions, although the Wildlife Management Specialist may assist with conflict and management actions involving other species. This position will respond to, evaluate, and take effective action on animal depredation and public safety problems and concerns; identify and make recommendations for long-term management of large carnivores the present consistent and ongoing problems; assist with multi-agency efforts to coordinate public education an, response; and instruct the public on techniques that will prevent or alleviate potential wildlife/human safety problem. Public outreach at community events, at public schools, and to local groups to provide educational information will be required of this position.

      The Wildlife Conflict Management Specialist will work directly with members of the public on wildlife conflicts, much of which occurs on private property, and must have strong conflict resolution skills, as well as customer service and people management skills to foster relationships within the communities The ability to safely and humanely: capture and handle wildlife, monitor and track wildlife particularly large carnivores including grizzly bears, black bears and mountain lions, and the ability to track and monitor wildlife via telemetry equipment will be required. The Wildlife Management Specialist will collect, assemble, and report population information, and make recommendations for management to area biologists and the regional wildlife manager. The incumbent will communicate with landowners to gain access to private property.

      The Wildlife Conflict Management Specialist is an integral part of the FWP Region 1 team and will work closely with wildlife, enforcement, front office, parks, and fisheries staff. Strong communication skills, ability to work independently and in a team, serve as a mentor to technicians. A desire to proactively keep people informed and respond in timely manner to public inquiry is required. This position will also work closely with USFWS, DNRC, forest service, tribal agency, local law enforcement and other agency staff as needed to minimize human/wildlife conflicts, capture and handle wildlife and manage wildlife involved in conflicts.

      The ability to work in difficult climates, in stressful situations, with offensive odors and smells, and in situations that could involve adverse human/wildlife interactions required. The ability to lift at least 40lbs, hike long distances in difficult terrain, safely utilize wildlife immobilization drugs, drive a 4-wheel drive and back up a trailer is required.

      Minimum Qualifications:

      A Bachelor's Degree in Wildlife Biology, Wildlife Management, Biology, Zoology, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, or a closely related field and two years of job-related work experience. Other combinations of education and experience which could provide such knowledge, skills and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis.
