POSITION OVERVIEW:

Responsible for the health and welfare of all animals, staff and guests in relation to all Flamingo owned wildlife on property. Responsible for the healthy and aesthetic design of enclosures and exhibits.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

*Must be able to do the Wildlife Specialist’s job;

*Supervises all other personnel in Wildlife;

*Responsible for the selection and purchase of all wildlife on property;

*Responsible for the health and welfare of all wildlife on property;

*Responsible for Flamingo compliance with all state and federal rules and regulations and maintaining all permits and licenses.

*Must be familiar with new USDA AWA rules in regard to avians;

*Required to work with and have knowledge of wildlife owned by the Flamingo and wild animals that visit the Flamingo that may carry zoonotic diseases.

*Is on 24 hour call 7 days a week;

*Vet Tech for staff Vet;

*Responsible for setting up and maintaining the capital budget and repair and maintenance budget;

*Responsible for creating and maintaining all manuals, logs, and records;

*Work with architects, contractors, and management in the proper designing of all enclosures;

QUALIFICATIONS:

REQUIRED:

*Undergraduate degree in related field (Biology, Zoology, Animal Science) or commensurate experience;

*Five years responsible animal handling experience with an emphasis in exotic avians;

*Two years as a supervisor in a professional zoo setting.

*Knowledgeable in exotic avian behavior, restraining, exhibit design, husbandry and diseases with emphasis on psittacines, pelicans, flamingos and waterfowl;

*Vet tech experience with exotic birds which includes restraint and injections

*Two years’ experience in freshwater fish husbandry and freshwater testing

PREFERRED:

*Second language

*Possess training skills utilizing operant conditioning.

*Experience raising altricial chicks
