      About the Role

      The St. Helena Regional Laboratory is an analytical laboratory that supports multiple sites and brands including, but not limited to: Beringer Vineyards, Beaulieu Vineyards, Stags Leap, Etude, Frank Family Vineyards, and Sterling Vineyards.

      This position will work closely with the winemaking, viticulture, sensory, and research teams across multiple brands and locations to coordinate and perform upwards of 300 analytical requests per day. The responsibilities of the Wine Chemist include, but are not limited to grape, must, finished wine and bottled wine analysis, monitoring and tracking fermentations, monitoring and tracking bottling operations, bench-top analysis, data collection, and recording. This position will also be responsible for participating in the designing of analytical methodologies.

      The successful candidate will have laboratory experience, strong organizational skills and time management, computer proficiency, have a quest for quality results and work well individually as well as in a team atmosphere.

      80% Laboratory Responsibilities:

      • 30% Perform routine juice, must, and wine analysis using automated equipment such as FTIR, UV-Vis, NIR, auto-titration, and discrete analyzer. This includes pH, titratable acidity, brix, alcohol, ammonia, free-amino nitrogen, free and total sulfur, volatile acidity, residual sugar, anthocyanin, tannins, and various other analyses.
      • 20% Perform advanced analysis using automated equipment such as GCTQ and Aqualog. This includes Brettanomyces, Haloanisoles, Smoke Taint, and Oak Volatiles.
      • 10% Review, record, and enter data into Excel, JDE, VinoEZ, and AgCode.
      • 10% Perform all quality assurance functions during bottling operations.
      • 10% Maintain equipment in proper working order and perform quality control measures and instrument calibrations as needed.

      10% Teamwork & Collaborations:

      • Prioritize, communicate, and handle the needs of multiple sites and stakeholders.
      • Support the Laboratory Supervisor in onboarding, training, and providing guidance to multiple interns through the harvest season.
      • Collaborate with the Senior Wine Scientist to design and implement new analytical methodologies across the entire network.
      • Consult with stakeholders on deadlines, reported results, and scientific input when needed.

      5% Compliance:

      • Participate in HACCP related activities for the St. Helena Production site.
      • Assist the Laboratory Supervisor with responsibilities such as training and maintaining SOPs, SDSs, GMPs, GDPs, and GLPs.

      5% Other Duties:

      • Understand and abide by safety guidelines and laboratory procedures.
      • Clean glassware, countertops, lab equipment and instrumentation regularly, maintaining good general housekeeping of the lab.
      • Collect wine samples from tanks.
      • Perform other duties as assigned.

      About You

      • You have a Bachelors degree in chemistry or an Associate or Bachelors degree in any physical, chemical, or biological science with at least 30 credits of chemistry.
      • A Masters degree or equivalent experience is a must.
      • 2-5 years of previous laboratory experience.
      • You consider safety a top priority.
      • You have the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume environment with an emphasis on accuracy and timeliness.
      • You can work both independently and as a dynamic, contributing team member.
      • You have a positive attitude, eagerness to learn, and willingness to work long hours inside or outside.
      • You are motivated to ask questions, to overcome obstacles, and find solutions.
      • You remain composed and calm under pressure.
      • You have strong computer skills not limited to but including Office applications such as Outlook, Excel, and Word.
      • You can perform physical labor if necessary, and to lift 50lbs.
      • You have strong organizational and problem-solving skills; ability to manage priorities and workflow.
      • You have excellent communication skills; can communicate effectively in English. Bilingual in Spanish is a plus.
      • You have flexibility regarding work hours and shift assignment.

      Pay Transparency Disclosure: The base pay range offered for this position is $61,000 – $66,000. These figures represent what we reasonably expect to pay for this position, but the actual compensation offered will depend upon numerous job-related factors, including but not limited to candidate qualifications, skills, experience, education, location, and alignment with market data.
