      JOB TITLE:

      Lab Assistant
      DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:

      The Animal Science department is one of the largest departments in the CALSNR. We provide a vast array of undergraduate and graduate courses and programs, as well as many extra-curricular activities, like judging and quiz bowl teams. The goal of our departmental work study’s are to provide them with opportunities to advance their skills and connections to obtain a valuable job after their completion at UW.

      JOB PURPOSE:

      Lab Assistant for Dr. Pru's lab.

      ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

      {We are looking to identify one dynamic and committed student interested in completing a work study research project in the Department of Animal Science. Studies in the lab focus on non-classical progesterone signaling, ovarian biology, uterine stem cells, and understanding the molecular underpinnings of early pregnancy. Related to early pregnancy, a unique molecular dialog exists between the implanting embryo and the inner lining of the uterus (i.e., endometrium). It is our goal to understand this bi-directional communication between the embryo and mother, and to develop strategies to minimize/eliminate pregnancy failure, which occurs at a surprisingly high rate in domestic livestock species and women. The lab uses a variety of animal model systems, including mouse mutagenesis and in vitro cell culture. This position involves a great deal of small animal husbandry in which animal care will be provided for gene edited mice. Specific duties include working with animal care facility personnel 10-15 hours/week to complete health checks, ensure availability of food and water, weekly cage changing, and genotyping

      This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

      MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
      Education: Open to all majors, most beneficial to STEM majors.
      Experience: No previous experience is required.
      Other requirements: Must be eligible, have received and accepted work study award through Student Financial Aid for the applicable semester and/or academic year.
