    • Identifies, monitors, and assists students who may be disengaged from school.
    • Acts as a role model and peace making presence in hallways, lunchroom, and outside the school building.
    • Walks outside of the school building and parking lot before the school day begins to encourage students to be on time for class and to address any student issues that may be developing.
    • Greets students as they enter the school building to offer support and encouragement.
    • Meets with students who are chronically late to school. Contacts home and/or makes home visits to help identify issues affecting poor attendance.
    • Develops and maintains an awareness of potential neighborhood rivalries or conflicts, potential gang related issues, and other community issues that may impact schools. Keeps school administration closely informed on these issues.
    • Builds relationships through presence, visibility, and student engagement during non-classroom time at school (before and after school, lunch time).
    • Participates in teacher-student, parent-student, and student-student mediation scheduled throughout the day to identify and resolve issues causing disruption within the school and during class time.
    • Maintains safe environment by monitoring hallways, building doors, and re-directing students as needed.
    • Refers students to community agencies or student services as needed.
    • Maintains constant contact with school administration and student services staff.
    • Other activities as assigned.
    • Must be able to walk, run, lift, climb, bend, reach, and kneel.
    • Must have physical stamina to stand or walk on feet up to 7.5 hours per day.
    • Must have current physical on file with the District Office certifying applicant is able to meet all job qualifications.
    • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide and calculate decimals and percentages.
    • Must possess strong communication and listening skills that are culturally appropriate, a high degree of patience, and an open friendly demeanor.
    • Ability to work with students, staff, and community in a positive and supportive manner.
    • Ability to work effectively in a diverse work environment.
    • Ability to work as part of a team to ensure school safety.
    • Ability to effectively quell physical and verbal altercations between students, staff, and/or the public.
    • Ability to record and deliver information, explain procedures and follow instructions.
    • Ability to communicate effectively with teachers, students, parents, administrators, police officers, School Board members, nurses, the general public, and others verbally and in writing.
    • Must be able to work well under stress and to react appropriately in emergency situations.
    • Ability to work effectively outdoors and in a school environment.

      This position is limited term, for the reminder of the 2023-24 school year only. This position is benefit eligible.

      Summary

      The purpose of this position is to ensure safety in the schools, improve attendance of students in class, and improve opportunities to learn for disengaged students. The Youth Advocate will use outreach strategies, conflict resolution, non-violent crisis intervention, and mediation strategies to promote student connectedness in school. The Youth Advocate will work closely with administration, police, community, student services, and families.

      Essential duties and Responsibilities

      Minimum Training and Experience Required To Perform Essential Job Functions
      Must demonstrate personal maturity and must have experience in similar backgrounds as the youth who are being served. Must have experience in or full understanding of urban cultures, diverse cultures, and/or large high schools. Must have knowledge and appreciation for adolescent development and a desire to serve young people. Minority background and fluency in a second language is preferred. Must have completed or willing to be trained in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
