- Supervises a team of temporary staff in planning and facilitating service-learning opportunities for 1,000 Cary teens
- Provides support and oversight to the teens’ volunteer schedules, registration process, civic engagement and learning opportunities
- Creates and maintains consistent policies, guidelines, practices and trainings for members of Cary Teen Council, organizations with which they may engage, staff and volunteers who support the program areas
- Collaborates with staff on Cary Teen Council volunteer opportunities as well as learning opportunities
- Recruits, hires, coordinates, supervises, trains and evaluates temporary staff, contract staff, volunteers and program instructors
- Assists with the continued development, organization, coordination, and supervision of Cary Teen Council. May assist with future development of other types of teen programming
- Manages the volunteer software to create, enter and track volunteer opportunities, volunteer services registration, and hours of service
- Ensure correct program data entry and information pertaining to participation in and registration for Cary Teen Council in the current PRCR registration software
- Manages website content for all related program areas
- Create and manage social media promoting program opportunities and civic engagement
- Coordinates regular meetings of Cary Teen Council members as well as meetings/events focused on education, training and teamwork
- Maintains knowledge of organizations, trends and issues in youth programming, community engagement and volunteerism
- Manages agreements with outside organizations which present volunteer opportunities to Cary Teen Council
- Assists in supporting existing recreation programs
- Assist with implementing special events, community recreation and Town-related special events
- Performs other job-related tasks as required.
- Comprehensive organizational skills, presentation skills, and written and verbal communication skills
- General knowledge of working with volunteers – specifically teens
- General recruitment and coordination experience with large and small teen groups
- Ability to understand common needs and concerns of teens
- Ability to effectively work with teens and parents
- Ability to identify and access applicable trends for teens
- Ability to plan and carry out effective programs and teen council related events
- Knowledge of social media platforms and program promotion
- Ability to build partnerships and maintain effective working relationships with Town staff, the general public and participants
- General knowledge of recreation programs and trends
- Ability to supervise temporary staff
- Ability to exercise judgment in controlling the activities, behavior, and safety of participants
- Ability to perform administrative tasks to include budget planning, preparing and maintaining records
- Ability to schedule time and prioritize competing deadlines
- Ability to receive and follow oral and written instructions; ability to operate general office and data entry equipment and computers
- Ability to learn and navigate evolving computer software.
- Considerable experience in event management
- Considerable experience managing working with large groups of volunteers
- Considerable experience supervising full or part time staff
- Some experience in social media content creation and/or marketing
Cary’s Parks Recreation and Cultural Resources (PRCR) department is seeking a passionate, organized, and adaptable professional to join our team as a Youth Programs Coordinator!
This position will play a critical role in the planning, programming, coordinating and implementation of youth programs and events, primarily working with Cary Teen Council, and teen volunteer groups. Cary Teen Council is a volunteer-driven group with over 800 members in grades 8-12, dedicated to volunteering in the Cary community and surrounding areas throughout the year. The Youth Programs Coordinator will facilitate leadership and volunteer opportunities for these groups that focus on community awareness and service, education, and leadership/teamwork.
Work will be performed under the general supervision of the PRCR Operations Manager. This position will require a flexible schedule that includes being available during program hours, as well as weekends/evenings as needed to implement programs, trainings, and special events.

Requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Recreation, General Education, Social Services, or a related field and a minimum of 2 years of experience working with teens (ages 13+) in a group setting in either a paid or volunteer capacity.

Physical Requirements
Work requires the employee to lift moderate to heavy items in order to be able to load and unload supplies and equipment. An employee must be able to hear and talk in order to communicate with the public and teen participants. An employee must be able to climb, walk unassisted and move about freely in order to effectively run activities. Visual acuity is needed to read typewritten and handwritten materials and to view a computer terminal.
Conditions of Employment
Requires possession of a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment.
The work schedule will include a significant amount of evening and weekend hours.About the company
