      Description

      Position Summary :

      The role of the Adoption Staff Coach is to provide training and mentoring to maximize performance and consistency with adoption staff, troubleshoot issues within the department, and serve as the go-to person for the adoption department in the absence of a supervisor. The ideal Adoption Staff Coach thrives on engaging with people and the public, to inspire and support families in creating lasting bonds with pets in need of loving homes.

      Job Description:

      • Customer Interaction:
      • Create positive interactions with potential adopters by providing superior customer service.
      • Assist potential adopters in understanding the adoption process.
      • Educate prospective adopters about the responsibilities and requirements of pet ownership.
      • Provide information on specific animals available for adoption, including their history, behavior, and medical status, focusing on our long-stay guests.
      • Maintain the confidentiality of all information.
      • Matchmaking:
      • Review and evaluate Matchmaker Profiles in accordance with Joybound’s policies.
      • Introduce shelter animals to potential adopters and conduct shelter tours as needed.
      • Complete adoption paperwork and make follow-up telephone calls/emails to support Joybound adopters.
      • Assist the public in person, through email, and on the telephone in a manner that demonstrates Joybound’s interest, care, and concern for the public and the animals we serve.
      • Promote Joybound’s adoptable animals and programs within the animal welfare community and at special events.
      • Animal Care and Handling:
        • Learn and use proper handling techniques for shelter guests and ensure all animals are handled, housed, and socialized humanely and safely.
        • Ensure medical or behavioral conditions are identified and reported to the appropriate staff.
        • Always promote a humane and caring attitude toward all animals.
      • Team Collaboration and Training:
        • Uphold a high standard of professionalism within the department at all times.
        • Provide coaching and mentoring as part of the shift training process by offering alternative solutions, suggestions, and on-the-spot training.
        • Assist the supervisor in ensuring daily tasks are complete.
        • Assist with the scheduling of volunteers.
        • Participate and communicate in daily huddles and provide daily training updates.
        • Train and shadow staff and volunteers while learning new shifts, coaching on policies and procedures one-on-one and in small groups as needed.
        • Work with the supervisor on updating, developing, and implementing materials for training and daily work, ensuring the animals' well-being and the best use of staff time.
        • Maintain an updated report of how volunteers and staff are progressing in their training.
        • Serve as point person for incorporating new tasks into Adoption team’s work.
        • Assist with boutique inventory control; ensure supplies are stocked as needed.
        • Assist with reports and statistics, as needed.
        • Alert supervisor when errors are not resolving or if there are areas requiring further attention.
        • Promote teamwork, communication, and cooperation with all other departments.
      • Community Outreach:
      • Support Mobile Adoption and onsite events as needed.
      • Always treat people and animals respectfully, contribute to effective teamwork, promote staff cooperation, and foster public relations beneficial to Joybound.
      • Ensure adoption staff and volunteers comply with all federal, state, and local safety regulations and laws, as well as Joybound policies and guidelines while out in the community.
      • Perform duties that encourage the attainment of goals, contributions, programs, and business for Joybound.
      • Drive Joybound vehicles as assigned by supervisor.
      • Follow safe driving practices, obeying all traffic laws when driving for Joybound business purposes.

      Qualifications


      Physical/Environmental Requirements:

      • Work environment includes constant exposure to animals and animal allergens.
      • Push/pull moderately heavy objects up to 25 pounds.
      • Lift and move objects and animals weighing up to 50 pounds for short distances and humanely restrain animals when necessary.
      • Walk dogs weighing up to 120 pounds in various weather conditions.
      • Kneel, bend, stoop, squat, reach above and below shoulder level, grasp and turn objects, stand, and/or walk frequently and repetitively throughout each shift.
      • Flex the neck upward and downward; twist the neck and the waist.
      • Dexterity to handle animals and small objects.
      • Assess medical and behavior changes in animals using various techniques including, but not limited to, visually and audibly.
      • Sit for long and short periods using a computer.
      • Tetanus and rabies inoculations are required or must be waived.
      • Drive a vehicle.
      • Perform other duties as assigned.

      Educational Requirements:

      • High school diploma or equivalent certification. Some college preferred.

      Experience, Abilities, and Qualities Required:

      • One year of public contact work experience with a customer focus. Must have excellent communication and customer service skills.
      • Previous coaching, mentoring, or educator experience preferred.
      • Detail-oriented with the ability and initiative to work with minimal supervision and direction.
      • Ability to handle multiple tasks and work well under pressure.
      • Strong team player with staff and volunteers.
      • Bilingual is a plus.
      • Computer proficient with Word and Excel; ability to learn new programs required. Internet savvy.
      • Affection for animals, concern for their welfare, and a willingness to accommodate animals in the workplace.
      • Ability to communicate with the public, volunteers, and co-workers in a pleasant, courteous, and tactful manner at all times.
      • Demonstrate maturity, good judgment, professional manner, and personal appearance.
      • Comfortable and skilled in working with a diverse staff, volunteers, and community.
      • Ability to work with, evaluate, coach, and supervise staff and volunteers effectively and respectfully while holding individuals accountable for their results.
      • Knowledge of dog and cat breeds, behavior, and current general care and training practices.
      • Comply with all Federal, State, and local safety regulations, laws, Joybound policies, and guidelines. Follow established procedures governing safe work practices; and perform duties in a manner that assures the safety of oneself and others.
      • Must have a valid California driver’s license, must not have more than two at-fault incidents in three years, and must have no major at-fault violations in the last ten years. Must be insured.
      • Pre-employment background check screening is required.

      Hours:

      Full-time: 40 hours per week. Daily reporting hours and days of the week may vary according to the department's needs. Weekend and evening work will be required; must be available to work during Joybound’s adoption days/hours.
