      DEFINITION
      Under direct or general supervision, The Assistant Community Services Coordinator will assist in the planning, promotion and implementation of activities for recreation events, recreation programs, volunteer events, volunteer programs and more. Some examples of programs and events include but are not limited to; Afterschool Program, Break Camps, Leader in Training, Eureka Youth Council, Empower Eureka, ECO Eureka, Neighborhood Beautification, adult sports, youth sports, community classes, Halloween, Easter, Get Out and Play Day, Forest Moon Festival and community events hosted at the Adorni Center.

      CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
      The principal function of an employee in this class is to perform support functions in the planning, organization and implementation of City Community Services programs. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of higher level Community Services staff, but some leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. Technical and functional supervision is exercised over assigned temporary staff, volunteers and contractors. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with all others contacted in the course of work. The principal duties of this class are performed at various indoor and outdoor recreation sites.
      Expectation of Job Duties
      Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.
      • Performs support functions in the planning, organization and implementation of community services programs; oversees classes, workshops and activities for participants in recreation programs;
      • May participate in the selection of staff, including recruiting, screening, interviewing, and hiring employees;
      • Trains, and provides appropriate technical and functional supervision to assigned staff;
      • Participates in scheduling and evaluation of assigned staff;
      • Ensures the completeness and accuracy of a variety of documents, such as program registration and waiver forms; accident/incident report forms; staff time cards, etc.;
      • Orders and restocks supplies;
      • Responds to inquiries from the public regarding assigned recreation programs; represents the program/department at meetings;
      • Performs light housekeeping duties to ensure a neat, clean and orderly environment;
      • Performs support functions for special events as needed;
      • Receives and handles cash, makes appropriate change, and reconciles cash drawers in an accurate and timely manner;
      • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
      • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas;
      • Responds to questions and comments from the public in a courteous and timely manner;
      • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
      • Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.
      Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
      Knowledge of:
      • Pertinent laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures;
      • Principles and practices relating to planning, organizing and implementing community services programs for participants of various ages;
      • Training, scheduling and technical and functional supervision of assigned staff;
      • Conflict resolution strategies;
      • Facilities, operations and techniques used in community services programs;
      • Methods and techniques of record keeping and report preparation and writing; proper English spelling and grammar;
      • Standard office machines, equipment and computer software;
      Ability to:
      • Provide support functions in planning, organizing and implementing community services programs;
      • Train, schedule, evaluate and provide technical and functional supervision to assigned staff;
      • Interpret, explain and apply applicable policies and procedures;

      • Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
      • Quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;
      • Exercise integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.


      Requirements
      Education and Experience:

      Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
      • High school graduation or equivalency supplemented by college or other courses in recreation, physical education or a related field;
      • At least two years of experience providing support functions in the planning, organization and implementation of community services programs.
      Licenses or Certifications:
      • Valid California State Class C Driver's License.
      • CPR and First Aid Certification.

      PHYSICAL DEMANDS
      Must possess mobility to work in a standard office and/or community services facility setting and use standard office and/or recreation equipment, including a computer; to operate a motor vehicle and to visit various City and meeting sites; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Positions in this classification frequently bend, stoop, kneel, reach, climb, and walk on uneven surfaces to participate in recreational activities; and push and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push and pull materials and objects necessary to perform job functions.

      ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS
      Employees work primarily in an office and/or community services facilities environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Incumbents may be exposed to inclement weather conditions while performing some outdoors duties. Incumbents may be exposed to blood and body fluids rendering First Aid and CPR and are required to wear appropriate attire for the recreation activity to which they are assigned. Employees may interact with upset staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

      WORKING CONDITIONS
      May be required to work on evenings, weekends and holidays.

      Paid Sick Leave
      An employee who, on or after July 1, 2015, works for 30 or more days within a year from the beginning of employment, is entitled to paid sick leave. Employees will earn at least one hour of paid leave for every 30 hours worked. Accrual begins on the first day of employment or July 1, 2015, whichever is later. An employee may use accrued paid sick days beginning on the 90th day of employment.
