      Purpose of the Position:

      The Assistant Controller is a key member of the Finance & Business Services leadership team and provides strategic oversight and management of UAH and UAH Foundation accounting and financial reporting functions.

      Duties/Responsibilities
      • Develops, recommends, and implements appropriate accounting and financial policies and procedures, processes, and systems.
      • Provides strategic and administrative leadership for the functional financial units, including general accounting, UAH Foundation accounting, and financial reporting.
      • Provides leadership for University-wide accounting operations, including revenues, expenses, property, cash flows, and assets and liabilities.
      • Provides leadership and guidance for accounting staff and the University community to ensure the highest standards of fiscal integrity fiscal responsibility and accountability, excellent stewardship of University and UAH Foundation resources, and a collaborative team environment.
      • Recruits, selects, hires, trains, develops, and manages the performance of the Accounting team. Manages and supervises the day-to-day operations of the Accounting & Financial Reporting work unit, including assigning responsibilities, tasks, and projects to accounting staff.
      • Manages month-end and fiscal year-end activities including general ledger close, preparation of journal entries, and review and approval of staff journal entries.
      • Prepares and/or reviews and approves monthly general ledger account and bank reconciliations prepared by staff.
      • Maintains accountability for the overall accuracy, reliability, analysis, and evaluation of all financial data of UAH and the UAH Foundation.
      • Establishes and maintains systematic internal controls that provide for monitoring and safeguarding University and UAH Foundation assets.
      • Provides functional oversight of Banner Finance module, including participation in testing for new upgrades and modifications, configuration, training, data management, and integrity, and liaises with the Office of Information Technology, as needed.
      • Oversees the maintenance of the chart of account elements in the financial system.
      • Oversees the preparation and submission of applicable tax filings.
      • Respond to requests from the University of Alabama System for various routine and ad hoc reports.
      • Provides accurate and timely reports as needed to support the President, Vice President for Finance and Administration, other members of executive leadership, and University stakeholders in decision-making and analysis.
      • Provides oversight and management of reporting to external agencies.
      • Supervises and assists in the preparation of specialized financial requests, annual audited financial reports, as well as local, state, and/or federal reporting requirements, in accordance with Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) or Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) accounting standards.
      • Ensures compliance with applicable financial regulations as well as the University of Alabama System financial policies and procedures.
      • Coordinates standard and unannounced fiscal audits, including scheduling and assisting federal, state, external, and internal auditors in the completion of the applicable audit. Provides and/or coordinates responses for any audit findings or questioned variances.
      • Upon completion of each audit process, considers, reviews, and analyzes findings and other feedback, and implements revisions to practice, policy, or procedure, as warranted, to ensure continuous improvement in the University's accounting, documentation, and reporting efforts.
      • Interprets complex financial policies, laws, and regulations and advises executive leadership and the campus community as needed to ensure compliance.
      • Prevents, detects, and promptly corrects fraudulent or improper financial activities. Reports such activities, should they occur, to appropriate authorities.

      Minimum Requirements:

      • Certified Public Accountant License (current)

      • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Management, or a related field
      • Minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible leadership in relevant financial areas
      • Ability to communicate complex concepts and ideas
      • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office, including demonstrated proficiency with Excel
      • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with a wide variety of individuals and organizations
      • Demonstrated knowledge of and expertise in GAAP, GASB, and FASB requirements, and demonstrated knowledge of OMB A-133

      Desired Qualifications:

      • Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, Management, or a related field is preferred
      • Experience in financial services at a college or university is desired
      • Experience in Public Accounting and/or audit experience is a plus
      • Demonstrated understanding of research contracts and grants in higher education is preferred
      • Demonstrated knowledge of higher education and/or governmental financial management practices and standards is desired

      Published Salary (if available):

      120,000 - 150,000
