      A Place Called Home (APCH) is a dynamic, non-profit youth and community center in South Central Los Angeles. APCH provides educational programs, counseling, mentoring, music, dance, and art classes, as well as fitness and health and wellness opportunities. Our mission is to help youth discover their interests and talents, develop a better sense of themselves, and become active community members capable of making positive changes in their world.

      SUMMARY

      The Assistant Manager of PREP is responsible for implementing the Professional Readiness and Employment Program (PREP), which provides work readiness and career exploration opportunities to youth. This role focuses on preparing members for fulfilling careers by establishing job readiness objectives, developing and teaching relevant curriculum, and providing personalized career guidance. The Assistant Manager of PREP will work to ensure members are equipped with critical skills such as critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration, and that they are prepared for both vocational and college-bound career pathways.

      ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

      Work Readiness Preparation

      • Implement and facilitate job readiness training curricula for after-school members and Da Vinci RISE members
      • Develop and conduct exercises that promote the "TYAS Four C’s" among members.
      • Schedule, coordinate, and facilitate mock interviews and other preparatory exercises for employment opportunities.
      • Assess and document member progress in work readiness.

      Career Exploration & Exposure

      • Coordinate a wide array of career exploration opportunities, such as workshops, guest speakers, field trips, and employer site visits.
      • Educate members on vocational/trade training programs and career pathways with support from the Sr. PREP Manager.
      • Maintain and manage a database of career-related opportunities, including internships, externships, job shadowing, and vocational training.
      • Assist in organizing an annual career fair to expose members to career and vocational training options.
      • Facilitate educational workshops for parents and members on various post-secondary pathways in collaboration with the Sr. PREP Manager and Higher Education team.

      Career Guidance

      • Collaborate with the Sr. PREP Manager to create individualized career plans for members.
      • Prepare high school members for internships and externships through assessments, mock interviews, resume and cover letter preparation, and application assistance.
      • Administer and report on career assessments, providing resources to help members identify and focus on their strengths, skills, and passions.
      • Assist members in identifying relevant experience, education, and resources needed to pursue their career interests.

      Work Experience Support

      • Help members research and apply for job and training opportunities.
      • Assist the Sr. Manager in planning and executing PREP’s training components, including paperwork, stipends, and addressing challenges.

      APCH High School Internship

      • Coordinate APCH’s internship program, including recruiting participants, developing job descriptions, training, evaluations, and processing timesheets.
      • Facilitate internship orientation, supervisory meetings, and intern professional development opportunities.
      • Track and evaluate intern performance to provide constructive feedback and ensure program effectiveness.

      Holistic Development:

      • Address not only career readiness but also personal development, mental health, and socio-emotional skills.
      • Collaborate with wellness and counseling departments to provide comprehensive support.

      Technological Integration:

      • Incorporate digital literacy and technology training to prepare youth for modern workforce demands.
      • Utilize online platforms for training and mentorship, especially in light of remote work trends.

      Diversity and Inclusion:

      • Ensure that the program is inclusive and tailored to meet the needs of diverse populations, particularly BIPOC youth in inner-city areas.
      • Highlight any specific initiatives or partnerships aimed at addressing the unique challenges faced by these communities

      Administrative Duties

      • Develop and track qualitative and quantitative program goals for job readiness, career assessments, and other PREP components.
      • Stay updated on vocational/job readiness best practices.
      • Track and report member engagement and program resources monthly.
      • Assist with supervision during program hours, special events, and field trips.
      • Maintain a system for tracking member participation in vocational programs and job opportunities.
      • Execute administrative tasks, including check requests, budget tracking, case management notes, and necessary paperwork.
      • Serve as a mentor and role model for members.
      • Attend all required program meetings.
      • Perform other tasks as assigned.

      • Strong organizational skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
      • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.

      Education/Training/Experience

      • Two years of experience working with teens and young adults in career/vocational guidance.
      • Two years of experience in an office environment.
      • Experience in facilitating or instructing youth.
      • Experience in developing and implementing job readiness curriculum.

      PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS

      • Able to work in a dynamic, high-noise environment typical of a youth center.
      • Daily walking and standing; extended periods of sitting and computer work.
      • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
      • Able to communicate and convey accurate information.
      • Typing speed of at least 45 WPM.

      ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

      • Able to work well with diverse populations of employees and clients.
      • Available to work some evenings and/or weekends for department or agency events.
