APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:
JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Department of Health Policy and Administration (HPA) at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor with scholarly interests in health disparities early in the life course (maternal/child/family), particularly focusing on disparities involving rurality, poverty, race/ethnicity, and health services delivery. We are especially interested in scholars who will advance a critical understanding of how structural barriers affect access, use, and quality of healthcare services and how these barriers may impact disparities in health and social outcomes for disadvantaged groups. An understanding of how health and social policies impact children and families is critical to address structural barriers and advancing knowledge about policies that may improve child and family health disparities.
A scholar hired into this position would have the opportunity for collaboration with and mentorship of departmental colleagues whose expertise in health services research, health policy, social policy, law, economics, and public health will help shape and strengthen their program of research, teaching, and service. The scholar will strengthen the department in three interrelated areas of inquiry: healthcare disparities, maternal, child, and family health, and rural health. An individual hired into this position will be expected to conduct research, teach, and advise students in HPA’ s doctoral, master ’s, and/or bachelor’s degree programs.
We seek a colleague who has completed their doctoral training by the time of the appointment. Competitive applicants will have the demonstrated ability to conduct research in a multi-disciplinary setting and show potential for securing external research funding and establishing professional prominence in a relevant line of scholarship.
This position will be co-funded by Penn State’s interdisciplinary Social Sciences Research Institute (SSRI; https://ssri.psu.edu/ ) and is part of an initiative to hire four faculty members in different units across Penn State. These faculty members will join an existing campus cluster in health and social disparities. SSRI will foster and support collaborations among social and behavioral scientists and others, working from the person to the population levels on understanding and reducing disparities.
The Department of HPA and the College of Health and Human Development embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion as core values in both their mission and vision. Our goal is to support and empower, through training and placement, a broadly diverse generation to become leaders and scholars who promote human health, development, and quality of life throughout their lifespan. This position comes with a highly competitive salary and benefits package. Penn State has excellent support services available to faculty members and the College of Health and Human Development, the HPA department, and SSRI are committed to providing the necessary resources critical to helping the successful candidate further their research prominence. We envision the successful applicant as a key component of the department’s growth strategy.
The College of Health and Human Development strongly encourages applicants who would enrich the diversity of our academic community to apply. Through this position, the applicant will add to or build upon current research, teaching, and outreach efforts that seek to understand health disparities within traditionally marginalized populations. To learn more about Penn State University’s commitment to diversity and inclusion see the University’s Statement on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at http://equity.psu.edu/psu-diversity-statement . The mission of HHD is to enrich the lives of others. HHD believes in the power of human capacity for growth and achieves that mission by meeting challenges, both big and small, with excitement and energy every day.
