- Provide management options and diagnostics for fungal diseases threatening agricultural, ornamental, and native plants in Hawaii and in the tropics to strengthen Pacific Island economy and community health.
- Lead the college in developing nationally recognized tropical plant pathology/mycology programs through the advancing of diagnosis, control and management strategies against plant diseases that are most applicable to safeguard Hawaii agriculture industry (both food and ornamental), indigenous and canoe crops, as well as our native forest ecosystems.
- Support CTAHR Cooperative Extension Agents, Agricultural Diagnostic Service Center (ADSC) and industry across agricultural industries in plant disease diagnostics, work with multidisciplinary/ interdisciplinary/ trans-disciplinary teams to secure extramural funding in developing a resilient plant pathology research program with Extension Agents, ADSC or fellow faculty statewide.
- Support ADSC’s public services of plant disease identification through regular consultation, guidance, and information sharing in mutually beneficial efforts.
- Contribute to an excellent departmental undergraduate program and Tropical Plant Pathology graduate program, and participate in departmental seminars and other courses based on departmental needs.
- Contribute to program assessment, advise, and mentor graduate students, and develop a successful applied research program in fields including but not limited to fungal pathogens challenging plants in Hawaii.
- Master’s Degree in Plant Pathology, Mycology or related field and in addition to the Master’s Degree, 30 credits of graduate study from a college of a university of recognized standing and in a field relevant to the position involved.
- At least three (3) years of research experience in fungal disease management at the next lower rank, or its equivalent. Research experience in fungal disease management.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate results to scientists through peer-reviewed publications, and presentations at scientific conferences.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, and participate in interdisciplinary teams to accomplish multifaceted goals in integrated plant disease management.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct laboratory, greenhouse, and field experiments.
- Understand and support the University Land Grant Mission and core values of the College’s mission and vision.
- PhD. in Plant Pathology, Mycology or related field. Research experience in fungal disease management.
- Post-doctoral research experience in applied Plant Pathology, Mycology, or Fungal Diagnostics.
- Teaching and outreach experience at the university level.
- Demonstrated ability to identify a wide variety of plant pathogens.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a diverse group of clienteles, using both traditional methods (e.g., oral presentations, and extension bulletins) and digital/online methods (e.g., websites, and social media).
- Demonstrated ability to conduct an active extension program.
- Demonstrated ability to obtain extramural funding.
- Demonstrated ability to offer distance education course(s).
